Their main advantage is that they last longer and they can be used on light snow.
Leading evidence: 'Use on light snow' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Buy from a reputable manufacturer, buy "Forged" wheels as weight is an issue, and check for correct offsets.

Suggestion
Any wheel is hard to keep clean using OEM pads due to the enormous amount of brake dust they produce.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's time for a new set of tires. I was browsing through some pics on the forum and found some really nice looking wheels. I convincing myself I need a new set of wheels as well...
I'm a daily driver and here's my spec
1. there are a few snow days/year where I live (Seattle)
2. tires last a little longer than my current Michelin pilot sport (13k)
3. enhance the look of the car
I like the BBS LM and I found a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE960A all-season that seems to meet my needs.
My concerns are;
1. The RE960 are 18" only and the rears are only available 265/35. I currently have 285/30. Is it a noticeable difference?
2. Are the 3 piece BBS LM hard to keep clean?
3. My current 18" standard sports wheels kinda look small in proportion to the car. Should I go with 19? The problem is that I'm not able to find all-season tires for 19".
I don't buy wheels/tires very often, any advice before I pull the trigger on this combination? Seem like a reasonable combination?
One thing to check before you buy any wheels... make certain that they are the correct offsets for your car. A few guys here fell in love with the design/style of some wheels and bought them on ebay but didn't check the offsets. A few of the guys got burned because of improper fit, especially on the rear wheels. They tried increasing negative camber, mounting narrower tire just to make the wheels fit.
My recommendations would be:
1. Establish a budget for the wheels. You can spend anywhere from $1,200 to $7,500.
2. Establish a budget for the tires $1,200 to $2,000.
3. Find the wheels you like, knowing that you'll probably blow your entire wheel/tire budget on the wheels.
4. Decide on the type of tires you want (i.e. summer, all season, etc.).
5. Get the new wheels and tires.
6. MOST IMPORTANT STEP... post some pics of the new wheels and tires!

BBS LMs in 18" are going to look smaller than OEM 18s due to its stepped lip and mesh design. Definitely go for 19s, but I don't think BBS makes LMs with proper 911 fitment narrow or widebody.
Are they hard to keep clean? Any wheel is hard to keep clean using OEM pads due to the enormous amount of brake dust they produce. It might take a 30 seconds more per wheel - it's really not that bad and certainly well worth it for the classic looks.
Thanks, this is very helpful. I'm not able to find 19" all-season tires? Is it an odd thing to do or should I go for summer tires and have the yearly excitment going through the snowdays (only a few days per year).
Sounds like 19" is what I want
And yes, I'll promise to post pics whenever I figure out what I need :-)
Is all season really what you need? Do you need to drive this car if it snows? FWIW all season tires don't handle any better then summer tires in the rain. Their main advantage is that they last longer and they can be used on light snow. If you need to make thoes sacrifices then the 265 really does not make that significant difference to the 285 except that I prefer the way a 285 looks on the rim (it bulges out more). Remember 19" tire do suffer some what in ride so I would suggest you get a ride in someones car with 19".
I checked with tirerack and they now have the 19" LMs (end of next week) with Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position (all season) :-) . I'm close pulling the trigger...
I get a lot of different opinions about this combo but seem like what I was looking for. I'm trying to find someone with 19s - some claim the ride will be a little hard. The 960s will last a little longer ~20k and be more practical for snow days.
Anyone with 19 that regretted moving up? Is the compromise moving up not worth it for the look? I'm willing to give up some in performance for the look but don't want the ride too harsh.
I was under the impression that LM's didn't come in the right offsets for the 996s. I could be wrong, though. I have 19 inch Champions on my car and they're great. No complaints. Of course, I had LM's on my M3 and they were awesome as well. The clean up time is going to be more for the LM's versus a 5 spoke design (of course), but it's really not that bad--worth it if you like the look of the wheels. I'd go for 19's if you're not tracking the car! Good luck.
clundin if you're ever on the Eastside (Kirkland), feel free to check out my car on OZ3 19" wheels lowered on PSS9s. I think you need a bit of a lesson in car aesthetics before you drop mad dough on a nice set of wheels.
19's are the better investment, especially if you plan on upgrading to a 997 in the future. Keep in mind wheels are like a watch or jewllery, they're an investment, so shop wisely. I shopped for 3 months and bought IForged Mesh 19's which I love. Buy from a reputable manufacturer, buy "Forged" wheels as weight is an issue, and check for correct offsets.
I would keep your stock rims for winter with proper snow tires and put proper summer tires on the 19's. I suggest Potenza RE050's or Toyo T1R's for longer lasting performance tires.
Damon is the man
I just love the look of the LMs and Damon was able to find and convince me of a working combo with all-season 960AS - just what I was looking for. So I pulled the trigger...
Life is too short.
There's a grey 997 (997 forum) - check out the pics and you can see why it was an easy decision.
Ben - I can pick you up on your offer to give me a lesson in car aesthetics, I'm new to this and a little impatient. I haven't lowered the car yet
- I know I should (next project) but need new tires badly...
I'll let you know the end result. Here's a before pic
DUBs are way too big on the 911.
The Champion RG5 multi-piece looks dope, flash! Nice lowering job, too.
Good luck with the BBS LMs, bud. I had them on my M3 prior. Safe choice and I'm curious to know what the specs are for your 911.
Show 'em how it's done SpeeD! haha
btw, a speed yellow just like yours drove past me on teh hwy this past weekend.. it looked so sweet and it didn't even roll on aftermarket wheels and was stock height.. i can only imagine what yours looks like in movement!
