The other issue is the lowered height requires caution when going into or out of gas station ramps.

I had the X-74 installed about 3 months after buying my Pcar, so I can't remember what it was like before as it's been over 3 1/2 years.

Your correct, I should have used the word 'Firm' instead of harsh but it was the first word that came into my mind so early this morning, didn't even have my first cup of tea

The car handles like it is on tracks and I wouldn't consider changing back.

However, it changes the car, the way the factory intended the car to ride and handle.

Also when it comes to selling the car I believe it will assist because then the new buyer will have that possibility and may not like the suspension setting I have at the time of selling.

The x74 kit uses high end Bilsteins that are very good at controlling the springs (Firm) with out introducing vibrations and clunks (Harsh) in to the chassis/cabin.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm considering the X-74 for my 02 Cab daily driver. I've read all the info I can. Some people say the X-74 is less harsh than the US standard suspension. Some say it's more harsh. I'd appreciate commentary from people who actually have this suspension as to the ride quality as a daily driver.
Thanks
The X74 is great! Handling and looks are much improved, ride is actually more like a Porsche should ride I think. That and the PSE are the very best options.
I have the x74 on my 99 c2. It is very similar to the gt3 that I have driven. It is not what one would call soft, although it handles great. I am very pleased with the ride and use mine as a daily driver. Please note that I am in the South though so my roads may be smoother than yours. Also, if you have a very steep driveway, you might have some scraping of the front bumper.
I had the X-74 installed about 3 months after buying my Pcar, so I can't remember what it was like before as it's been over 3 1/2 years. The ride is not smooth over pot holes or bumps. I encounter lots of that on my commute from NY to NJ using the car half time.
The other issue is the lowered height requires caution when going into or out of gas station ramps. The car handles like it is on tracks and I wouldn't consider changing back. Can you try someone's car with the X-74 before you make your decision? Where do you live?
I have the X74 on my 02 Coupe and it really is fantastic. That being said, I wouldn't want it on my daily driver even in San Diego where the roads are relatively smooth and unblemished. It's just very low and very firm. I wouldn't call it harsh but it's not comfortable enough for a DD in my opinion.
This is a suspension designed more for the track or the twisties not for commuting. Mine's more of a pleasure car for twisties runs and very occasional track days so it's perfect for me.
Is there a X74 kit for a 99 C2 and if so who sells it? Not that I am thinking of changing my mind to buy the PSS9 system, I just want to be aware of any other alternatives. Thanks
ROW 030 for your 99 works very well... even includes different sway bars.... much cheaper than PSS9 although PSS9 is a very good system you will have to upgrade to GT3 swaybars and then spend even more money on droplinks for those sway bars.... there is a significant price differential between ROW 030 and PSS9 + accessories; having said that I have the ROW 030 and after 2 high speed track events I can attest to the design and value as well as the performance that the ROW 030 kit brings...
ROW 030 is also acceptable as a daily driver... but it does get a little harsh when your tires get down to the wear bars...
good luck.
I have the x74 setup on my '02 996. It is fantastic!!!!
However, it is much more harsh than stock. Find someone in your area that will give you a test ride.
Thanks for your input.
I have decided to save my pennies for the PSS9 system, sway bars etc. basically because out of the 030, X74 and PSS9, the PSS9 is the only adjustable system. How often will I adjust it is hard to say, but the fact I can between street and track is nice to have. Also when it comes to selling the car I believe it will assist because then the new buyer will have that possibility and may not like the suspension setting I have at the time of selling. 030 you probably could get away with it, but I am thinking that the X74 will be a harder sale due to it's harshness (younger generation probably won't care, but for the others a harsh ride for a car they want to drive through the windy roads with there significant other may be a no sale). Even though I have not been in a car with the other systems, I am sure they both have good points and the cost is definately less. But if I had to choose between 030 and X74 I probably would go for the X74 just because I like the car to be low as possible (but again I can get the saem from the PSS9 without the harshness). Reading some of the comments I found about the X74, a lot of owners also put on an engine plate as a safety measure, I have heard pro's and con's on that item as well. Most of these people also tracked there car more than had it as a DD. For those that use the X74 as a DD I am sure it is fun but could be a smoother ride if they had the PSS9 or 030.
So since Skipp started this thread it really is up to him and his budget.
Let's make a distinction here between "Harsh" and "Firm". I have the x74 kit and drive it everyday. Many will attest that the roads here in northern California are really bad. I have no problem with it. I would say the stock suspension was more "Harsh" than the x74. You would receive more road noise and vibration that was transfered in to the chassis than with the x74. The x74 is definitely more "Firm" the ride allow you to feel more connected to the road and the handling is great. All float is gone, and there is very little body roll.
What it comes down to is the quality of the valving in the dampers. The x74 kit uses high end Bilsteins that are very good at controlling the springs (Firm) with out introducing vibrations and clunks (Harsh) in to the chassis/cabin.
I drove 2 different Honda S2000 ('o1 and '04)for 5 years and they both rode and handled better than the 996 until I put on the x74. Now the Porsche handles and rides better than both.
The x74 also offer a great value for ~$2000 you get shocks, springs, swaybars, and bushing. Installation is easy because they come pre-assembled and there is no ride height to set or corner balancing to do.
There is my pitch for the x74 YMMV. Those of your in the SF Bay Area that are interested in a test ride let me know. I often go to the Santana Row meet, we could meet up there.

Yep the x74 sounds like a great deal and less of a headache, I guess I am still on the fence post, but I would take you up on the meeting at Santana Row. So PM me with more info and when you will be going there next, then I can see your car etc.
dude you gotta drive it to make a sound decision. as u can see, trying to get a sense for your **** feel is diff depending on age, body fat %, driving styles, etc.
do I have any regrets about being lowered on pss9s? heck no. it's not even an option for me to roll on stock suspension.
I was there this weekend, pretty good turnout. It will probably be a couple of weeks before I go again. I'll PM you when I plan on going to see if you can meet up.
Andy
Andy, look forward to receiving your PM.
I will be at Thunderhill with the PCA GG on August 4th and 5th, but any other weekend (oh except July 14th as I will be at Stanford Stadium watching a football/soccer match), I am available.
X-74 all the way. It is the way the car should come from the factory. PSS9's just unnecessary complications. Yes, the car is lower, but not so low that you hit everything. However, it changes the car, the way the factory intended the car to ride and handle. I had JIC's on before the X-74, you want harsh, thats harsh! I personally found the X-74 a little soft.
I have a x74 kit available, new in the box, with an engine protection cover. I btraded my 996 for a 997 and now don't need it. PM me if your interested.
