Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I just had my 996 C4S shipped here to Illinois, after an extended period without it I'm kind of worried about theft, since I believe there is only one other porsche(black 996 turbo tip) in the entire town, that I've seen at least. This is going to be my DD, so it'll be attracting attention for sure. Obviously lo-jack is a major contender. Does anyone have any experience with them? Are there any other services that are better? Thanks!

POST 3Original post

Check this out. i was thinking about getting it. Much better than Lo-Jack. http://www.escortradar.com/entourage/ Reasons why: 1.) Police need specially equipped car to find it (not all of them have it) 2.) Workload of police to get to it 3.) This tells you the moment the car is moved - not waiting to discover (hours, days, weeks later it was stolen). 4.) Tells you exactly where the car is.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This looks good(and much more reasonable). Do you know if it's possible to install in the engine bay?

POST 5Original post

it will cost you $180 in subscription per year, but compared to auto theft insurance, that sound quite reasonable. One thing you want to make sure, that the data sent is stored somewhere, because you might only discover the car has been stolen a couple days after the thieves have taken the car apart or stored it an 'out of reach' area.

POST 6Original post

Full coverage covers theft, does it not? Also, I don't think a 5-10 year old Porsche is that likely to get stolen, your odds would be far worse in something like an Acura Integra or a Honda Accord. I've had all sorts of rare and nice cars, but only one car stolen. It was a 10+ year old Honda Prelude Si (the only car I've ever had that wasn't fully insured). :/

POST 7Original post

How about a garage? Do you have one of those? Always buy a garage first (preferably with a house), then a fancy sports car.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a garage, of course. I was referring to when the car is parked at work, or other places around town. One question about the gps units: if for some reason, I get into an accident, could the data in the unit potentially be used for/against me? This sounds a lot like those big brother units you hear about in some cars. And yes, my insurance does cover theft, but who know what value they'll put on the car. I'm more interested in getting my car back than getting money for it. Thanks!

Good to hear you have a garage. GPS questions.....???? If you don't know the value the insurance company puts on your car, you should be asking sooner, than later. Sometimes when they steal the car, you don't want it back.

I have Lojack in my C4S and have found it reliable as it was already installed in my car when I bought it used. FOr me, the key question is does the local police department where you are moving to have the right equipent for them to "track" and recover your car if ever stolen. If you travel and it is stolen from airport or whatever, you would want the police to track and recover your car(once you notified them it was possibly stolen) without you having to feed them info from your laptop or smartphone?? Lojack was/is I believe the msot pervasive tracking service adopted by lawenforement in the US with the largest coverage area ( last I looked). I don't have any affiliation with LOJACK other than having them activate the system in my car as working when I purchased and my theft insurance was reduced by 35% and no subscrition fee each month........... For me, LOJACK has that advantage and is tranferrable to the next owner for about $50 as I recall..................... Demosan

on-star is used against people... I'm sure this could be as well.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmm, Looks like insurance will be enough for now. It's too bad lo-jack isn't offered in my region. Thanks for the help everyone

POST 15Original post

What kind of town do you live in in Illinois that's small enough to only have two Porsches but unsafe enough that you'd worry about your car getting stolen? I'm in Dubuque and don't think twice about leaving my Porsche anywhere around town.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The town is pretty safe. It's just that being one of the few Porsches in town made me a bit uneasy. I've lived my entire life in northern California, where P-cars are quite common. After having it here for a few days though, I think everything should be fine. Not sure about the muffler bypass though....

I have heard people hardwire a prepaid cell phone with GPS. Program the phone to auto-answer calls and turn the ringer off. Once the cell phone is hardwired and hidden all you have to do is have the police call it.
