Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK, I'm seriously thinking about doing the B&M SSK *but* I have some reservations.. the usual, probably - how difficult is this thing to install? I'm not completely mechanically inept but then again, I don't do a lot of my own wrenching, either.. and this would certainly be the biggest mod on the car I've done, to date.
Is there a good DIY somewhere that goes through the process step by step? I've done a search - but there's almost too much information out there. all I get are the posts about "did the install last night." etc.. (and other posts like this one, LOL..)
Secondly, I've heard some people love the SSK, others aren't so enthralled.. and it's basically a "one way" mod.. people suggest sitting in a car with one installed before doing it if you have a chance..
Is there anyone with an SSK installed in the Boulder/Denver area that wouldn't mind letting me sit in their car and click through the gears so I can get a sense of what we're talking about?
Thanks,
- Nick
Nick - here are the step by step DIY instructions for the B&M shifter install.

Print these out in color and they will help a bunch.
When I did mine it took about 2 hours. I helped a fellow Rennlister do his almost two weeks ago, and it took us about 1.5 hours. If you can turn a screw driver, you can do this DIY. It really is NOT as difficult as it seems to be on paper. Post here if you want to do this and I can give you a couple of tips that will help in the process.
Nick, I've got the B&M SSK...I'm leaving for SoCal for a week and then Atlanta for a week, but would be happy to let you see what it's like after that. I had Orrin at Eurosport install mine...it was worth it as I did not get any of the notchey feel that some complain about.
Thanks.. I knew I saw them somewhere - I thought it was in a posting but I
guess someone (you or someone else) must have posted the link previously..

Thanks.. after next week I'll be out of town myself until the beginning of Aug.. How about if I send you email when I get back, we'll see if you're in town, and figure out a conveniant time to get together...

Just took the car out for a spin. Let my son drive some twisties - he's driven it before I got the OEM SSK, and he's hooked. Wants one in his Mazda 3! The feel and short precise throws are unbeatable. Actually one the reasons I opted for a new '08 Audi S4 as my work car - shifter has a similar (not quite the same, but similar) feel as the SSK. Looked at BMW (335xi) but the shifter is awful - rubbery, vague, and imprecise.
Tim, hit 2222 miles today which happens to be 07/07/07! An omen perhaps??
Phil - good for you!
By my calculations, you will hit 2,539 miles on 08/08/08! Whoo-hoo!
But in order to do that, you are really going to have to bear down and DRIVE it!
Phil - that has GOT to tell you something when your wife agrees with the smart-@ss guys (like Wayne....... OK, OK.... and ME!) on the Porsche Forum.
Just ship her down here to NC, and I'll break her in for you! BTW - I mean the car... not your wife!
Do the SSK....the difference is stellar.....mine feels perfect too. When I want to take off, the shift b/w first and second is a world of difference. It really is great and makes the car feel sooooo much faster with the fast shift....did I mention that I think it's great? And yes...Tim has got some great tips.....you can find them by searching Short shift....very helpful stuff.
I had some help but did it in 1.5 hours too.....I'm sure if you post...someone is bound to help you too.

Finished the B&M SSK and EVO billet linkage earlier today. Man what a difference! No more sloppy shifts. The install was much easier than I was expecting. Followed Karl's excellent instructions from Imagine Auto and had no hitches at all. Should have downloaded onto my laptop but too lazy so just kept running into the kitchen computer to check my step-by-step progress. In total, about 1 hour 15 minutes of actual work. Felt pretty good after the install since first mod on a 2 week old car.
The instructions are posted on the imagine auto site under tech tips-link below.
