Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Indy replaced crank sensor, and it started right up for him.

Can the pump run initially but still not supply enough pressure, I don't know.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm having the same problem. Porsche Dealer couldn't reproduce. Ran fine yesterday after I picked it up from dealer. Filled tank at gas station. Started right up this morning. Went to son's soccer game and car will not fire up again. Called indy instead and he thinks its a bad crank sensor. I'm not so sure. It was towed to dealer on Wednesday and perhaps the bumpy ride loosened back the fuel pick up lines and therefore, it started right up for them. They ran it all day and nothing went wrong. The TSB on Optical TDI's thread sounds more correct than a bad crank sensor. Going to add another gallon of gas and see if that loosens the lines or pickup stuff inside tank, and hopefully fires up. If not, then, back on AAA flat bed. Any ideas? Crank sensor, or above TSB on "running out of fuel" symptoms?
Saga continues. Indy replaced crank sensor, and it started right up for him. Picked it up today and drove to my house for lunch. No start, same problem. Ordered fuel relay from dealer, they are out of them. Thought of clutch switch, but if I try to start without depressing the clutch, there is no activity. If clutch is depressed, it will crank or turn but not fire so I think its not a faulty clutch switch. Could a bad ignition key cause this? Can fuel pumps run intermittently? Car ran ok this morning for indy and myself. Indy's theory on bad crank sensor made sense, but not the cure.
Bad connection around either the fuel pump or ignition could very easily cause intermittent problems...
Can you hear the fuel pump when you turn the ignition on?
It didn't start last night either. Engine turns and you can hear the fuel pump priming when ignition switch is turned to first position, but no start. This morning, I cranked it for a few seconds longer and it fired up kind of rough, but didn't die. I kept the revs up for a few seconds and then let it idle. Decided to drive it to P. dealer. They had ordered a new fuel pump relay, and it is supposed to arrive today. They think its that due to the sporadic nature of the no-start. On the way there, I could tell it wasn't running normally, somewhat lower in power and then surge, but didn't die, not even at idle. Idle rpm felt normal, not erratic, but at speed, something was off. So I am hoping it doesn't start while at the dealer so that they can diagnose better. What does the fuel relay do?
If you have the same symptoms as Optical TDI, then why wouldn't you consider the same diagnosis as Optical TDI (which was a bad fuel pump).
Are you just hoping for a different answer that's cheaper to fix?
Not really, just want it fixed. Was told by P dealer that fuel pump either works or doesn't. So, the sporadic nature of the no-start makes me believe that its not the fuel pump. I hear the pump whirl when ignition is turned to first position, so I guess the relay is working. Can the pump run initially but still not supply enough pressure, I don't know. but car is at dealer and hopefully will know. optical tdi's post doesn't specify if the fuel pump made any noise at first ignition position, and I believe, once his car quit, it didn't start again for sure. Mine is intermittent
