Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Do you mean that you still are running the stock intake....but surely not the same air filter that came with the car?
Leading evidence: 'Run stock intake....but surely not the same air filter' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run stock intake....but surely not the same air filter' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

IMO, avoid them. Some here like them and have had no problems while others have had problems with them. It seems to be a "coin toss" on what results you will get.
Most will tell you go with EVO and not K&N. I have the EVO and my MAF is now having problems but I do not think one is directly coordinated with the other based upon mileage.
The design of the MAF on the MK1 pre-facelift cars got improved with the facelift, so all 99-01 cars may end up with a blown MAF when installing a CAI. Following the reports on this board, it seems that it is more likely with the K&N 63 serie CAI than with the new generation EVO. People seem to be also more happy with the design and quality of the EVO. However, the price difference between the 2 products is the price of a new MAF.
I had a CEL (blown MAF) almost immediately after I got the K&N CAI but since then (new post-facelift MAF), I couldn't be happier with the CAI. It sounds great at >4k RPM and might have even increased the hp of my car; at least it sounds like it did.
I wouldnt use a K&N on a lawnmower! The paper element is more than sufficient for airflow of the 996 and does a better job of filtering than any other filter type made.
I still have the original air filter my car came with at 55k miles, now I have 95k miles on the car and a couple of tanks ago, I got 27 MPG overall.
Please tell me this is an exagerated story. You couldn't still have the same air filter on your car for some 45K miles? Could you?
Not sure where you live but in my neck of the woods after 15K the filters are ridiculously dirty.
Do you mean that you still are running the stock intake....but surely not the same air filter that came with the car? That wouldn't seem prudent under any circumstance.
I have the stock filter WITH a blown MAF not too long ago. I do not think its related to the CAI as my car has never had one. Maybe people with a bown MAF had it coming but its just coincident that they did a CAI at the same time?
I don't think it's conincidently that the MK1 MAF gives up when you install a CAI but one part of your statement is true and needs to be pointed out: the MAF is a consumable that in a lot of cases does not last the whole lifespan of the car.
