Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

It made my PSE sound like crap which is why I ended up getting it fixed.

No unique explicit quoted action; no causal link assigned

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have heard a very slight rattle from the rear of my '01 cab. Usually right after I start the engine (with the top down) and proceed from dead stop (at idle) to a few MPH in 1st gear (and at very low RPM, typically <1k). The rattle is brief and quickly goes away. I'm a recent owner but the car passed PPI with flying colors and just had it's 30k maintenance where, again, nothing was discovered. However, I have only noticed this rattle on a couple of occasions and even then only with the top down (when it would obviously be more audible). Reading about all the cat failures here, I'm now worried. It just passed smog test here in CA. If it is a cat, I think this should be covered under the emissions warranty. Should I take it in? Could it be something worse? (Anything engine-related that's not covered under warranty counts as worse...) How likely could this be something serious but yet not discovered during PPI or 30k maintenance? Thanks...

POST 2Original post

I have the same thing on my 2000 996. It rattles for a few seconds on idle on cold engine, but goes away very quickly. As long as you don't have a CEL, just leave it...

POST 3Original post

check the supports for the exhaust tips. They commonly break.

POST 4Original post

Had the same problem on my 02 c4s with PSE which ended up being a broken baffle. It was not covered under warranty. If you take your foot off the gas pedal with your rpms up you can hear the noise/rattle if your windows or in ur case the top is down. You'll hear it better if you're driving in a more enclosed area ie. parking garage. It made my PSE sound like crap which is why I ended up getting it fixed.
