Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, OK, I know this is a cross post. Sorry mods, but I am not getting any answers from the wheel and tire section of the forum. Seems pretty deserted... Maybe more luck here. ********************** Would like some advice on right tire sets for track and street/winter driving. Car is a 2003 996, Stock (for the moment - likely with PSS9/10 next season). Stock wheels are 17s. Current tires are Bridgestone Potenza RE050A. Rear tires are getting a bit thin and will need replacement soon. Car is used primarily for track by me but needed as street vehicle for short commutes by guests and wife during the year (including winter with occasional snow). To avoid the multiplication of tires and keep wife's sanity, I am considering of the following: - Have a set of 18 with DOT approved track tires, e.g. R888 (mainly for track duty) - Have a set of 17 (current wheels) with winter/rain tires for street use year-round Couple of questions for the experts: - What is the downside of running winter/rain tires year-round on the street? I am guessing traction, wear, and noise, but is that really a concern for short commutes? - If I leave the R888 on for a few months in the summer, would it be safe for a regular driver on the street, even in the rain? Any other thoughts and suggestions which keeps 2 sets of wheels and costs down much appreciated. Thanks a lot! FM

POST 2Original post

Given your stated requirements, your plan above sounds reasonable.

POST 3Original post

Max performance tires for the summer... track tires are RE050a's? why not keep those if they work on the track... winter/rian tires for cold temps and rainy season... I see no drawbacks, neighter is a compromise now if you wanted to run snow tires at the track or max performance summer tires in the winter that would be a comprimise...with 2 sets you are set... literally. Tracks closed in winter anyhow and the smaller tires are fun to push when its your turn. Also you save the winter road rash from your 18" wheels what was your question
