Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tried the Schnell and love it. Install took about 40 minutes and was a breeze. It takes a while to ge things apart but is well worth the time and reward.

POST 2Original post

I'm sorry did ypu say 40 minutes? Was that with a factory hacksaw? Wow that's fast.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was a very quick mod but I have wrenched on my previous two Porsches and eight BMW's. I am fairly fluid with moddiong cars and did two short shifters in the last two BMW's. Not being all that ready for the 996, it took twenty minutes to get the console out and only about 5 mins to get it back in. I went with the Schnell and the instructions are just about the best notes I have ever seen regarding a mod. Kuudo's to those guys.

POST 5Original post

that's awesome... where are you at? maybe you can help me with mine.... but mine's a B&M.....

POST 6Original post

Good job and a great mod. So easy a caveman can do it, and it's such a dramatic change from goo to go....

POST 7Original post

It is relatively easy to do. Just follow the B&M instructions. Here are their instructions in PFD format. If you have a color printer, print them out because the colored pics really help the first time you do it. http://www.bmracing.com/media/products/pdf/67.pdf If you decide to do thie install yourself, let me know because there are a couple of "tricks" and short cuts I can share with you.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Happy to help if you are in the Dallas area.

POST 9Original post

I noticed that you have a supercharger on your car. Can you please tell me the performance improvement this gave you and if you don't mind me asking, the cost to purchase this. Thanks

POST 10Original post

hey thanks tim...... i'll try to wait for a group... this way, i can blame it on someone if i mess up......

POST 11Original post

man... don't i wish... i am located in Socal.......but thanks for the offer......

POST 12Original post

Hi Tim, I just ordered the short shifter from Eric....I see you have a few tips....what would those be? Thanks,

POST 13Original post

Jon - Some shift ***** have a set screw on them, but most OEM ***** do not. The set screw will be up high on the shaft after you have lifted the leather boot up. If you don't see a set screw, then the shift **** just pulls off. Be careful when you pull the shifter **** off of the shifter. It will take a lot of force, and it will come loose suddenly. You could really hurt yourself (literally) if this happens. To avoid this bit "hurt" I did this: o - I took two screwdrivers and placed on each side of the shifter shaft. The screwdrivers face in opposite directions so you can hold the handle of one screwdriver and the shaft of the other screwdriver in each hand. o - Sitting in the driver's seat, place your left forearm on your right knee. With your palm facing up, grab the left side of the two screwdrivers (already on each side of the shifter shaft) with your left hand. o - Then grab the the right side of the screwdrivers with your right hand (also facing palm up). You can now use your left knee as a fulcrum and pry the **** off. It may go flying straight up, but you won't knock your teeth out. Here is a link to the B&M instructions. http://www.bmracing.com/media/products/pdf/67.pdf If you received the "old" instructions with your B&M shifter, they will instruct you to disconnect the cables from the cable ends. DO NOT do this! There are two important things that will make the process easier: o - DO mark the cables, (this is a "just in case..." step #16) o - DON'T disconnect the cables from the cable ends as shown in step #17. Skip step #17 and proceed to steps #18 - #20. o - After step #20, pull or pry the cable ends off of the shifter. If you can't do this, then remove the cable ends from the cabels (AFTER you have marked the cables - step #16) and proceed with step #21. In step 23, the instructions said to use a utility knife to cut the plastic couplers. I used a sharp wood chisel, which was MUCH faster and easier. Watch out for flying bits of plastic - you need to wear eye protection. Hope this helps!

POST 14Original post

Tim, Fantastic advice...especially about preserving my teeth....had a good laugh on that one! I'm looking forward to tackling the job, and have bookmarked your advice. Thanks again. I'm sure I'll chime in once it's installed. Bedtime now. Best, Jon

POST 15Original post

This is what the alternative method looks like once the cable connectors have been removed from from the shift tower.

POST 16Original post

Tool Pants - thanks for sharing that pic! I didn't have one to post!

POST 17Original post

Tim- If you or other Charlotte guys familiar with the install of the B&M and wouldn't mind helping me with mine, I'd appreciate it. I'm in the South Charlotte area. I bought the short shift and the EVO billet shift linkage from Eric at Bumperplugs a few weeks ago, but haven't had the courage to start tearing into the car.

POST 18Original post

I would be happy to help. It's really not that difficult. I didn't do the EVO billet shift linkage, but that should not be a problem. PM me and let's plan a day/time to do it!

POST 19Original post

How much shorter throw is the Schnell shifter compared to stock? I had not heard of that brand before. I have a B&M in my car.
