Suggestion
For the 996s, Turbo S was a run of 996TTs Porsche did with X50 and PCCB brakes standard.

Using the same arguement, one can legitimately claim that the 2002 Carrera has a higher horse power than 2001 C4 (or C4S for ROW).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There is no difference in peak hp rating among C2, C4 and C4S (or for 993 for that matter).
I thought S and non-S (i.e. regular) were only applicable to the C2 and C4 (in the 911 lineage).
I really didn't know S'es were also applicable to the turbos. So is a "Turbo S" better than a "Turbo" (on paper at least) ?
What are the differences?
FYI, this is the Turbo S on
ebay
that prompted this question.
Even the photographed Porsche paperwork lists it as Turbo S !?
That very NON-difference is what had me confused when I bought my C4S. Then I learned about the X-51 package and was a little disappointed that all S models did not have it.
Of course mine is the standard 3.6 but I still really love it compared to waiting for my 930 to spool up. I bought the 96 as a driver and that is exactly what it is.

I thought all pre 02's were C4 with the 3.4L and 02 onwards were all C4S...?
If that is correct, then there IS a HP difference between the 996 C4 and C4S
I am not really sure what you mean.
The maximal horsepower in 996 MY 1999 to 2001 was 295 (for MY 99) and 300 ( for MY 2000 and 2001, due to e-gas and other mods), for both C2 or C4. All had 3.4-Liter engines (88 hp/L). I don't believe that there was an S version for these model yrs.
From 2002 to 2004, the engine displacement for all 996 models (C2, C4 and C4S/there was no C2S for 996) was increased to 3.6 Liters giving rise to peak power of 320 hp (89HP/L). There is no difference in peak hp rating among C2, C4 and C4S (or for 993 for that matter). For MY 2004 you could have ordered Option X51 raising the peak hp to 345 (without any change in peak torque) for any 996 model except for cars equipped with tip transmission.
The S designation for 997 model (and 996/993 turbos) has an entirely different connotation which, in case or 997S, reflects 3.8-Liter engine with a peak hp of 355 (93 hp/L). I hope this clarifies any ambiguouity
What I meant was:
1. 996 02-04 - There is no C4 model, all AWD models are C4S (am I correct? Coz' I haven't seen a 996 C4 from 02-04)
2. discoganya posted: "IIRC, there is no HP difference between the 996 C4S and 996 C4."
If I am correct in #1 above, then there IS a HP difference between the 996 C4S and C4 models.
1. There was no C4 for 1999.
2. The factory, in fact, built both C4 and C4S (with the same peak hp) in the yrs 2002-2004 (Please check:
www.flat-6.net)
. Because of popularity of C4S, not too many base C4 models were impored to the US. I found at least 3 C4 cabriolets (one 2002 and the other two 2003 model yr) on the autotrader website. As you mentioned it is quite possible that for MY 2004, the only all wheel drive 996 model for the US was C4S.
3. As for horse power rating, I am a little puzzled about your comprison. If you compare 2001 C4 (3.4 Liter engine) with 2002 or newer-model C4S (3.6 Liter engine), of course there is a higher hp, because of the engine sise and the other mods. Using the same arguement, one can legitimately claim that the 2002 Carrera has a higher horse power than 2001 C4 (or C4S for ROW).
4. In a given model year, as far as I know, there is NO difference in peak hp between C4S and the standard Carrera. The major differences are in the suspension components and brakes (derived from the 996 turbo).
5. In my prevoius post I reporeted the peak hp for the 1999 MY as 295. It is instead 296 hp
Regards
Loren,
I am aware of PSM and e-gas. The statement about 1999 C4 was based on the information I had from the flat-6.net. I was surprised becuase I thought that there was a C4 for 1999. Now it seems that the info from flat-6 was insufficient.
Anyway, for the 996, the S version, in a given model year, dose not have a higher peak hp than the non-S type.

The only "S" version of the the 996 Carrera series was the C4S - which had the same engine as the normal Carrera but body, brakes, and suspension of the Turbo.
It wasn't until the 997 Carrera "S" series that the "S" cars got larger displacement and more horsepower.
"S" usually means something special -began as a designation for more hp, but also used to denote body style.
For the 356 series car, there was a Super 90 (badged S90 on the rear decklid)
For the 911 (1966-1977) there were base, L, T, E and S models. In all instances the S had more.. Power.
Some called the 914 2.0 a 914S, but that designation was done by dealers (and some promotional material) but not by Porsche proper
For the 964 - I don't recall an "S".. but we all know there were RS, RSAs, RSRs and Cup cars
The 924S - which took the basic 924 body and stuffed in 944 engine and running gear
The 944S - a 16 valve version 944 - 188hp (non S had about 150hp)
993 C2S and 993 C4S - Came with the turbo widebody. The C4S also got turbo brakes and suspension. The C2S had non turbo brakes and suspension. hmm Seems we start bluring the "S" designation a bit here?
993 Turbo S - limited production, with more hp (rated at 424?) vs the stock 993TT (400hp)
996 C4S - 4wd, Used the Turbo bodywork , suspension and brakes (widebody) No hp gain over the regular C4/C2 996
996 Turbo and 996 Turbo S - As already mention, the TurboS had about 25more hp
997 and 997S. The 997 uses a 3.6l motor. The 997S uses a more powerful 3.8L motor.
I like Porsche's consistancy of thier inconsistancy, that was very confusing when I was trying to find my brother a 02 C2S. Needless to say that sucks, I was also hopeing that there was a power difference but once again NO. Oh well he ended up getting a 02 C4S and is very pleased. A 2S would have been sweet because it should have been less weight which would mean better performance oh well.

I think what CosmosC4S was trying to say was for the USA market:
1999-2001 C4 3.4 was produced as Coupes & Cabs
2002-2003 C4 3.6 was produced as Cabs only, C4S 3.6 was produced as Coupes only,
there was no C4 3.6 Coupes or C4S 3.6 Cabs
2004 C4 3.6 was produced as Cabs only, C4S 3.6 was produced as Coupes and Cabs
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
