I took the car to the dealer this morning and they confirmed that the CEL was caused by a faulty CATS.

FYI - just had both of my "blown cats" replaced by the dealer last week at no charge on an '02 C4S with 43k miles.

if I can get the stealerto replace on their nickel, I want to know about this.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I Blew a Cat Yesterday... er, wait a minute... that didn't come out right!
OK, I'll try again. About 7 to 10 days ago, I noticed a rattle coming from the rear of the car when the engine was runing at idel. On the way home last night I get a CEL. I took the car to the dealer this morning and they confirmed that the CEL was caused by a faulty CATS. They had to order a new one and it should be here next week.
Tim,
Do you have to pay for the new Cats or the Dealer has the obligation to replace them for you since your car has less than 50k miles, right? On the BMW's, I think by law the Cats are covered up to 80K miles, not sure if it is still true or not? Have you talk to the dealer on this issue?
Cheers,
I have my old cats and race cats. I'm thinking about ditching one or the other................... I like the sound of the original cats better for what it's worth.
Boa - this should be a warranty item since the car is still less than 4 years old and under 50k miles. Once the new CAT is installed, I'll report back on this thread.
FYI - just had both of my "blown cats" replaced by the dealer last week at no charge on an '02 C4S with 43k miles. Covered under the emmision control warranty.
According to the service advisor, the key factor in getting them covered under warranty is the CEL. No CEL, no warranty coverage. The reasoning is that no CEL means that they're still functioning correctly, even if they're all busted up inside and rattleing like a bunch rocks in an empty can.
Sounds like you should be OK with the warranty coverage.
That's good to know! Thanks!
BTW - I may be perverted but at least I'm not excessive about it. I only blew one cat, but you did two of them. Did you "do them" individually or was it a
mnage trois
?
I'm not one to "blow and tell" but I didn't blow them at the same time, it was about a week apart. Just got lucky that I could have them replaced at the same time.

If I were paying for them, I would have gone for the 100- or 200-cell high flow cats, but as PCNA did it at no charge, that wasn't an option. I talked to the service advisor, and he wouldn't install non-OEM cats under the warranty.
Mike - good question! First reason, I don't want to replace them on my nickle. Second reason, I am trying to sell the car so I want to keep it stock, well mechanically stock at least.
Same happened to me on my 02 C4S. Ratteling coming from the exhaust and cel light on. I am out of warranty the 5 yr warranty but the dealer replaced it without a whimper under the 8/80 warranty.
sorry for the ignorance, but need a little bit of help here... lots of acronyms here (CATS, CEL)... I do have a rattle in my exhaust... if I can get the stealerto replace on their nickel, I want to know about this. Thanks and take it away for those of you who want to make some good fun out of this posting... got pretty thick skin!
