Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I couldn't stand the sea of grey inside, so I went to black mats, changed the steering wheel to something less monolithic and added the non-smoker tray to break up the console.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys, how does the gray interior hold up? My beige scratches too easy and I didnt want to go through the same with gray. Is it durable? Is black more durable than gray? I found 2 - '02's with gray (really want black) and wondering if I should hold out for black or not. TIA Cory

POST 2Original post

Tippy -- I think if you really want black, you should hold out for it. I have the 996 Graphite Grey and I like it, but it's not for everyone (especially if you really want black). The grey is easier (I think) to look a bit dull and bland, especially compared to the darker grey of the 997 Stone Grey or the really dark almost black Natural Grey. I think it needs a bit of contrasting trim to help break it up. On the plus side, Graphite Grey doesn't seem to show dust as much as black, but shows some scuff marks a bit more.

POST 3Original post

I went from black to grey... grey holds up fine, no scratches on mine. Black is great because it probably ages the best and never looks dirty. I wouldnt hold out for a black interior if you found a gray one you really liked. The biggest plus for grey is it makes the interior feel much roomier. Ross

POST 4Original post

Cory - When I was looking for a 996, I found 5 or 6 cars that had the options I wanted but passed on them because they HAD black interiors. I just don't like cars with black interiors. Dark colored interiors get hotter than lighter colored interiors, which is just what you need in SA. I will NEVER drive a car with a black interior. I have Graphite Gray interior and I really like it. I also have the Metropol Blue deviating carpet, which makes the interior look a little darker than an all gray interior. It holds up well. I agree with Alpha1, that gray does not show dust as much as black.

POST 5Original post

gota911 -- I wish I had dark deviating carpet, but I have to settle for just black floor mats. I bet yours looks great with the Lapis blue exterior paint.

POST 6Original post

Alpha1 - What color is your exterior? Here is a link to a post with a few interior pics of my car. I am curious to know what you think of the combination after you see the pics. https://rennlist.com/forums/showpost...19&postcount=1

POST 7Original post

gota911 -- I have the ever popular Seal Grey. Seal Grey on Graphite Grey -- so creative, eh? I really like your Metropol deviating carpet -- really complements the Graphite Grey and the Lapis Blue. I think aluminum trim and Arctic Silver painted trim go particularly well with Graphite Grey. Good luck with your sale.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, thanks for the replies guys. The place that had the '02's didn't want to give enough for my trade so I had to pass. Tim - Ah yes, you know SA well and I agree with the heat, that is the biggest reason I want a silver or white car. Yours looks great and it is the only deviating carpet one I have ever seen. So what you say, since you wanted to sale your car earlier, how about $38K for yours...... j/k

POST 10Original post

Cory - Well, I did say $52k, OBO. But certainly $38k will NOT be the Best Offer. However, since you are in SA, I could go to $50k.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If I could swing it, I would be all over it....yours is very nice. Makes my car look like a beater.

POST 12Original post

The gray scuffs just as easily as the beige. Seems like if you look at it wrong, the "soft touch" paint chips off. I previously had 986 with black interior and no such problems, probably because the black doesn't show the marks. For me, painted center console is probably in my future.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you, that is the response I was after. So gray scuffs just as easy as the beige, now I know I will hold out for black.

POST 14Original post

The most durable interior is by far black... gray, beige whatever... they show stains easy. can't stand anything but black.

POST 15Original post

Tim - Your car is in awesome shape! Good luck with the sale.

POST 16Original post

With regards to the gray/metropol blue carpet interior... today I had my graphite gray console repolaced with a black one. Me and the wife both thought it would break up all the gray, as well as wear better... picking up car tomorrow. (i have seen many beige interiors with black consoles, looks good) Ross

POST 17Original post

But it wont match your grey steering wheel, right Ross?

POST 18Original post

i have graphite gray and it has held up well. scuffs and scratches are hardly noticable. plus, i think black gets way too hot.

POST 19Original post

Correct... wont match the steering wheel. But i think a black wheel on a non black interior looks very strange... someone here has a Boxster red interior with black wheel, not a fan...

POST 20Original post

Don't know if this is helpful, but here's my 50,000 mile/3 owner graphite interior. The car is Ocean Blue. I couldn't stand the sea of grey inside, so I went to black mats, changed the steering wheel to something less monolithic and added the non-smoker tray to break up the console. To my very conservative taste, it was an improvement. Sorry for the crap cell phone pix...

POST 21Original post

It hides the dirt and dust real well. My interior is a little monochromatic, but I am adding aluminum pieces to mix it up. Here is a 5 year old 55K mile interior.

POST 22Original post

I have the Space Gray interior.....I love it. It's dark, but not too dark. It seems to me that it's a good alternative to a black interior.

POST 23Original post

my grey steering wheel is a mess thanks to the PO. Its on my list to be touched up.

POST 24Original post

Andy - thanks for the compliment and the best wishes on the sale.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So is there two types of grays?

POST 26Original post

Actually three! There is Space Greay, Graphite Gray, and Classic Gray (which I think is on the MY99 only).

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Everyone I have seen on here or in person look the same to me, I cant tell them apart.

POST 28Original post

One more, if you count the "Natural Grey" -- but it looks almost black.
