IIRC, my dealer recommended replacing the entire tensioner (which I beleive comes with the solenoid), for which the part alone was $7xx.00.

Suggestion

if they show excessive signs of wear (grooved) then I would replace them while you are in there to reseal the covers.....the engine does not have to come out for covers.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

25 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My dealer says the engine has to come out. Does this sound right to you guys? Please advise.

POST 2Original post

I went through this with my MY00 C2, and got the same answer. I don't know how to copy threads, but if you do a search with my name (Stefan), there is a "New Owner" thread dated 3/21 or 27/ 07, which describes my experience. Stefan

POST 4Original post

That's the one - what's the secret on copying threads? Stefan

POST 5Original post

Yes, the engine has to come out in order to get the cam covers off and to properly remove and install the new solenoids, because the cams have to come out . You do have a vario cam system and not a vario cam plus right? What year 996?

POST 6Original post

IIRC, my dealer recommended replacing the entire tensioner (which I beleive comes with the solenoid), for which the part alone was $7xx.00. And, since you have the engine out, might as well do both sides??$$ plus any other "might as wells". Stefan

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oops, sorry for not posting... my car is a 1999 C2.

POST 8Original post

Your question indicates that the covers are leaking....which is a simple, inexpensive repair. Are you now saying that one of the solenoids is not working?

POST 9Original post

1999, For comparison sake, how much is it to fix a weeping/leaking camshaft cover at dealer or indie?

POST 10Original post

the solenoids leak sometimes too though the harness and yes you need to pull the engine on a 3.4

POST 11Original post

I won't go to far with this but it is possible to do them in the car if the covers are what is leaking. At my dealer camcover reseal would be about 18hours labor for both sides and ?I wouldnt pull the engine for that...

POST 12Original post

After you have done a Search and found the thread you want, just Right Click on the thread titel and select Copy Shortcut in the pop-up window. Then when you get ready to post a comment, simply right click again but this time select Paset in the pop-up window.

POST 13Original post

I hear you can lower the engine and eliminate taking it out

POST 14Original post

Thanks Tim. I guess if I had asked my 6 year old daughter she would have given me the same answer. Stefan

POST 15Original post

18 hours without replacing the solenoids. I thought you wrote simple, inexpensive repair. Did I misunderstand? Stefan

POST 16Original post

Often, simply snugging up the 2 bolts on each cover will stop them from leaking.

POST 17Original post

18 hours for a cam cover resal is robbery warrenty time is like 4.1 per side even times 1.5 is only 12 hours

POST 18Original post

Nah, I'm sure she would have made it sound easier than my instructions. Glad to be of some help!

POST 19Original post

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone for their inputs. I spoke to the service rep and he confirmed that it is not just the covers that are leaking, but the inner solenoid seal.

POST 21Original post

t obe honest unless its dripping whit it running id put down some cardboard in the garage and call it a day

POST 22Original post

I think you are wasting your money if the solenoids are working fine.

POST 23Original post

No that is not a simple replacement on your 1999 996 if you had a newer style engine with variocam plus then it would be an easy replacement. Yes there is a way to lower the engine so that you can facilitate the removalof the cam covers and yes (with the right tech) you can replace those solenoids while the engine is lowered in the car.

POST 24Original post

Have the tech check the wear on the cam solenoid guides when the covers are removed. if they show excessive signs of wear (grooved) then I would replace them while you are in there to reseal the covers.....the engine does not have to come out for covers. The tricky part is the scavenger pump for bank 1, all that has to be done is loosen the engine mounts and ease (with a large pry bar) the engine forward and it slides right out...

POST 25Original post

That is exactly the way I feel about the RMS too. Too much panic over a drip of oil, it is a machine, it will leak eventually. Cars are about the only machines that can actually go a long time without leaking oil, take a look at heavy equipment and airplanes. They leak all the time from almost day one they are built. Totally normal.
