This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any of you 996s especially in WA and CA experiencing engine knocking? It's a light click noise when going back on throttle in 2nd, but sometimes happens in first. How bad is this for the car? Should those of us experiencing this knocking noise be concerned about longevity?

POST 2Original post

As someone stated in another thread, you should confirm if this "knocking" is actually detonation or some other noise. Run high octane (100 or so) and see if the knocking goes away. If it does go away with higher octane then you most likely are dealing with detonation and it is quite bad for the health of your engine.

POST 3Original post

I have no idea how you can call a 'light click" a knock. Low octane knock does not, in anyway, ressemble a click and would only get worse as load increases in all gears.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What do you guys think it is? The guys who drove with me (Porsche techs) told me it sounds like pre-detonation. I'm likely getting the terminology wrong. Apologies. Don't mean to test anyone's patience.

POST 5Original post

Does your tech have access to a PST2 or PiWiS? Different versions of Motronic will allow you to check for knock sensor activity in different ways, either directly or by showing the (per cylinder) ignition timing retard as a result of knock or by some other actual value menu item.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Everything shows clear on the ECU readout

POST 7Original post

If your timing is not being pulled, either you do not have knock or your knock sensors are not working. Any scanner that displays individual sesnor readings will show you if timing is being pulled.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

is this scanner contraption something that most porsche indys have on hand 1999? pardon me for my ignorance.

POST 10Original post

It wouldn't showup as a fault code, you need to go into the "Actual Value" menu item. You need to find a shop with a Porsche System Tester 2 (PST2) or PiWiS ($$$). Watching knock sensor activity is not part of the OBD2 standard so the generic scanners that most independent Porsche shops have will not work for this.

POST 11Original post

Running lean? Your other post on 6 speed state you have a GIAC. Do it the old fashion way. Take out your spark plugs and 'read' them, that will tell you how the car is running.
