There are too many good cars out there, I would walk, it may end up costing much more in the long run than you think without any idea of its history.

Is it possible to find good condition used motors?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys, I am new on this board and am looking to buy my first Porsche. I have always been a Porsche fan, although I have always owned/raced hondas.
I was wondering if there is anyone near the Addison, TX area who would be willing to check out a 996 for me? If I end up buying the car, I will buy you dinner while I'm down there!
I am up in NC, so I was hoping to get some sort of idea what shape the car is in before I buy a plane ticket down.
Also, if I end up going there myself to check it out, are there any things I should be specifically looking for? It is a '99 996 C2 3.4L Manual ( C2 means, Carrera 2wd, right?)
Thanks guys!
I bought a Boxster S in Addison and drove it back to ST. Louis. I think it was a Ford-dealer.
What dealer? Tell us more about the car, also, post a link!!
It is saying that I can't post links or images since I am a new user.
It is at a place called European Motors Inc. Google "European Motors Inc" The first link should be it. European Motors USA. Then just go to the inventory and look at the Porsches. It is the only 911 on there.
looks like the car has most likely been tracked
. Does it come with the original seats and steering wheel? I would make sure to get a good PPI with this vehicle.

Yea, I assumed the car has been tracked, haha. That doesn't bother me though, as I am selling a pristine condition Integra Type R that has seen a fair share of track time for being my daily driver.
I don't think it comes with the original seats or wheel. The manager I talked with said the owner had bought it for his daughter at some auction and she didn't want the car so they are stuck with selling it. Should I be worried about a car they got from an auction or one that seems like it is priced so low?
A new steering wheel is not going to be cheap. $1500 or there about for the wheel and airbag.
I would also have a close look at Type 2 over revs. That to me would make it a no-go
A porsche dealsership and some independent shops have the electronic equipment necessary to read the codes that are stored in the car's computer. You would be quite surprised at all the information that is stored in those onboard computers. A type II over rev is an event where for some reason, the car's engine exceeded the safe rpm limit beyond a certain threshold. This can happen when you miss a downshift and hit a lower gear than you intended, or perhaps spin out the car. The safe rpm limit....as you can see on your tach...is around 7200 before you hit redline. Hittin redline is a type I and is not big deal since the rev limiter is there to cut off the gas and prevent you from exceeding 7200 rpm. A type II over rev is potentially harmful to your engine. Too many of them, and most folks would probably walk away from the purchase.
Type I is a bounce off the rev-limiter (no big deal)
Type II is a mechanical over rev (like down shifting into too low a gear and forcing the engine past the limiter)
A dealer can hook the car up and check.
I contacted that dealer before I bought mine and got a bad feeling. He told me he did not know much about the car and there were no service records. It has been for sale for a while. Most of those smaller dealerships I would stay away from.
I don't mind the wheel... I'm just worried about the history of the car and what condition it's in.
I'm starting to lean away from this one as the dealer doesn't know the history, it was purchased at an auction, etc.
How hard is it to find a 996 w/ those thin 5 spoke wheels? This is the only one I have seen! Aside from my old boss' track toy.
I think that the 5 spokes are from a newer model 2001+
you can buy them for relatively cheap from several take off wheel shops and knockoffs for even cheaper. I would personally stay away from that car.
The 5 spokes are 02+, and based on the rest of the "stuff" done to the car, I would assume they probably are the Italian knock offs. There are too many good cars out there, I would walk, it may end up costing much more in the long run than you think without any idea of its history. Too much unknown, dealer may just want to dump it (partly 'cause of the mods) based on the price. You can do better if you are willing to spend a little more and be patient.
^ jcalhoun looks to have a nice ride for a very fair price.
I'd love to. I can't FIND the link. All I get is a generic "rennlist" address regardless of how I get to it. For instance:
http://mall.rennlist.com/login/members/member_ads.htm
This takes you to the classified section and you have to click on Porsche, then 911/993/996 and then find the specific car. While I would like to learn (hey, I finally figured out how to upload the picture), I'd also like to sell the car. Just PM me
currently in greensboro... might actually be headed to wilmington later this week.
shoot me an email:
[email removed]
thanks for the help guys, i think i am going to steer clear of this car.
996 cop, what are you looking to get for yours? looks clean!
Have reserve set at $33900., but if it does not sell by next week I will keep dropping the price. Need to finish remodel on house. I believe the car is the best deal for the money since it has the new engine (2005 version) with only 8k miles and existing warranty. The car itself has 84k mi, but it sure doesn't look or run like it. Car has been pampered it's whole life.
****... You just bought the car
Sorry to hear your selling it
After the remodel are you going to come back or are you just not a porsche guy?
Great car good luck with sale
Just got this email from the guy in Texas w/ the burgandy 996:
We are no longer going to be offering the 911 for sale. Another customer, who was interested, had the vehicle inspected my their mechanic. During the inspection, it was determined the motor is about to fail. As a result, we are not going to sell this vehicle.
I apologize for the delay and inconvenience, but we are not going to sell a vehicle that we know has an issue.
So... glad I didn't get that one. But I'm still on the lookout for one! I was doing some instructing at VIR this past mon-tues and got to hop a ride in a '99 996... I was quite impressed!
What does something like that run? Is it possible to find good condition used motors?
Also, if one were to want to swap in a 3.6L... is this possible? I assume you would need a 3.6L ecu and a few other items?
Thanks for the help P-guys! And remember... if any of you ever have questions like this about any honda... come see me!
you could get a used motor for maybe 6-8k but it would be better to get a new one from porsche for 10-12k have them install it and get the 2 year warranty.. you could do a 3.6 swap but it would cost you way too much, not worth it for the extra 20hp...
