The bottom line is that the 996 is the new daily driver to replace the 944.

Anyway - I'm replacing my air cooled 911 with the 996.

I think it's because most people aren't familiar with Porsche and don't know the latest model changes so when they see it they think it's brand new.

The '87 Carrera sees somewhat limited use - 10k miles in 3 years.

So here I am a year on from that exchange and I figured I will use his experience to my benefit and not spend as much as I was originally planning on a 996 so I can keep the other car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I thought it's about time I introduced myself.
Having recently purchased a 996 and found that my 'usual' forum community doesn't have a very busy 996 section I decided to sign up here. I owe you guys thanks already since your previous posts along with the 'search' feature helped me to find a good switched 12v supply for hardwiring my Passport X50 this evening.
The 996 is my 3rd Porsche and I am well and truly addicted. So the 996 joins my '84 944 and '87 911 Carrera. To be honest the 944 has to go soon, but I am going to do the wheel bearings first. Hopefully it will get another unsuspecting individual hooked on Porsches.
I don't know whether photo's will upload yet but if not ask me five stupid questions that I can reply to and then I'll be OK.
Beautiful car, and welcome! I can't tell you how valuable this board has been to me, and I hope the same for you. And it really seems to be a great bunch of people. (Even the ones that pick on me
).
Welcome,
I too have seemed to migrate here since I've added a 996 to my stable. Your car looks fantastic. I'm guessing an '02 or '03? You should know by now that you MUST post year and options. Few more pix would work too....lol.
Your new ride is so different than your air cooled, huh? The creature comforts and extra power are why I added on my end.....mine is a daily.
Best of luck, and congrats on having clear sides already!!!a
J
Yeah, an '02, 6-speed. Still familiarising myself with the options but obviously Seal Grey, factory side skirts (I believe) Charcoal Leather, suede headliner, heated seats (really useful on 90 degree days), Bose Sound, PSM, Bi-Xenon. Probably other stuff that I have forgotten. I'd go out and look right now, but it's raining.
Very different from the air cooled car, but obviously of the same pedigree. It is very nice to have all the creature comforts that work well. The climate control is fantastic. Much better than sweating my **** off in the 944. The bottom line is that the 996 is the new daily driver to replace the 944. The '87 Carrera sees somewhat limited use - 10k miles in 3 years. I figure it's done well to get this far looking like it does, so why spoil it. That said it does get out for some good runs at weekends. I don't think I will ever sell that one.
More pics too...
Thanks for all the nice comments guys. I LOVE this car and I'm obvioulsy delighted with it.
There are some drawbacks;
1. Everybody at work seems to think I earn too much money. I think it's because most people aren't familiar with Porsche and don't know the latest model changes so when they see it they think it's brand new. Admittedly it is in great condition inside and out. These cars are built very well and have a hard time showing any signs of wear.
2. I have a line of people wanting to go out for lunch. This obvioulsy isn't a huge problem except I never used to go out for lunch everyday. This is getting expensive and I can't really suggest that if I drive they buy when they think I'm overpaid or independently wealthy.
3. I have sell my 944. I bought the 944 just over a year ago. It was a steal, having suffered from the usual timing belt failure. I have lovingly rebuilt it and had many good times working on that car over the past 12 months. It's finally looking pretty good and it will be sad to see it go. On the other hand look what I get to drive instead.
Sorry, I know it's the 996 forum but it does have relevance. Here is my 996's predecessor
Aerkuld6 - Welcome ro Rennlist and Congrats on getting the 996. Very nice looking P-cars - all 3 of them! Thanks for posting the pics!
Damn, if "newbies" keep posting pics right away, my days as the Sheriff of the "Pic Patrol" may be numbered. Hell, the guys may cut my pay!
Looks an awful lot like my new car - seal grey 2002 C2. I don't have the aero rockes though. Same problem with the coworkers too, especially the VP-ops he keeps looking sideways at me. I hear through the grapevine that he's always wanted a Boxster. He's a VP for chrissakes - buy one!
Anyway - I'm replacing my air cooled 911 with the 996. After a week behind the wheel of the new car I ain't looking back.
Welcome aboard! That 87 is absolutely beautiful! And the 996 too
This is truly the greatest board around for p-cars. I have made some of my closest friends here on the board. And although you see bickering every once in a while at the end of the day we all (for the most part) get along great and usually end a bickering with an apology. Ask me how I know
Enjoy your new 996!
Honest it was an accident!
I had just finished washing and waxing and had raised the wing to avoid the automotive equilavent of belly button fluff.
The neighbor over the road has a very nice C6 Corvette with some very loud pipes on it. We get on well and have allowed each other a brief run in our cars. I think he is almost a Porsche convert, he certainly understands the appeal. He is glad to have another car guy in the neighborhood as everyone else seems to think the two of us are nuts.
Beautiful cars Aerkuld. Love the red 964. Reminds me of my father's white one from over 2 decades ago.
Meanwhile, the overhead of the 996 is awesome. I've not seen that angle before but the car really looks quite sleek and svelte from that angle.
Don't mean to be rude but the red car pre-dates the 964 era by a couple of years. I knew what you meant though and appreciate the comments.
I was quite impressed by the overhead shot myself, the 996 is a very pretty car.
I could never choose between the two if i ever had to.
A little anecdote with the '87...
I was lucky enough to find it three years ago and bought it from a very nice gentleman in Alabama. He was selling it because he had just bought a 996 and was having trouble justifying keeping two 911's in the garage. Last year, just after I bought the 944, I e-mailed him to tell him that his old Carrera was still as good as ever and to see how he was getting on with his new one. His response was that he liked the 996 and it was a great car, but he really missed the old Carrera. In fact he missed it so much that he had to go out and buy another one but he didn't think it was quite as nice as the one he sold me. He went on to add that if I ever wanted to sell it please would I let him know.
So here I am a year on from that exchange and I figured I will use his experience to my benefit and not spend as much as I was originally planning on a 996 so I can keep the other car. I should really e-mail him again and give him a progress report but I don't want to rub salt in the wound.
As I said earlier in the thread - I'm well and truly addicted now. I can't imagine ever having to drive a non-Porsche. Now I'm working on the five year plan to a Twin Turbo.
