I used the 2.25 and took that picture that tim has to the muffler shop and I said "I want you to do this".

Galun - since you have admitted to doing some "reading" here, I can only assume you have run into a few posts that "remind" the "Newbies" that it is customary to give a small intro and post a few pics of their cars.

Suspected cause

It is probably the fact that you had no mufflers on your car for the last 3 days that has minimuzed your perception of the PSE mod.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, newbie member here (this is my first post I think!). I just picked up my '02 996 from another Rennlist member yesterday! My BMW buddies kept on telling me the engine is now on the wrong end of the car Anyways, I had been reading up on rennlist quite a bit before I got the car. One of the modifications that I'd like to make is the "PSE muffler" mod. It seems quite simple, makes a lot of sense, passes emissions, and easily reversible (just buy another set of stock cans). I see a lot of posts on how to remove the mufflers, pipe size recommendations, etc... but for the life of me, I could not find a post on what to actually tell the muffler shop. Someone posted a video of a muffler that had been cut open, and someone explained how the exhaust gas pass through the cans (3 chambers?) What exactly do I need to tell the muffler shop when I bring them my stock cans? And, how exactly does this mod work? The best picture I can find is the one here: (EDIT - apparently I cannot post links - it is in the PSE Modded 3.6 Muffler thread, post 7 made by SANDOVAL). It looks like cutting a hole in chamber 2 of the muffler and bypass the gas to the exhaust directly? I'd love to learn more about the actual gas exhuast flow before and after the mod, and compared to PSE. Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

Right Click on the pic below and select Print. Take the pic to your muffler guy and tell him the stock mufflers look like the muffler on the right and you want him to add a 2" to 2.25" pipe like the muffler on the left. It really IS that simple.

POST 3Original post

Tim will help you. He just did the mod with my old "cans". He will also help with the whole intro thing. He should be along any time now...........

POST 5Original post

Tim, are you ok today? A newb with 1 post and it is not an intro or display of pics??? Dude, get that 3rd cup of joe and fire up the brain cells!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hahaha! I just picked up my car yesterday and drove it back home, and I got home at 11pm. I don't want to post pics of a dirty car with splattered bugs! Just to confirm - the correct pipe size for 3.6 cans is 2 inches? I see 2.25 inches but that seems to be for 3.4 cans. Thanks!

POST 7Original post

Yeah, and I thought I would help him before I hit him for not posting pics! hee hee Galun - since you have admitted to doing some "reading" here, I can only assume you have run into a few posts that "remind" the "Newbies" that it is customary to give a small intro and post a few pics of their cars. Your "intro" mentioned that your car was an '02 but that is about it. We would really like to have more specifics about your car and would like to see a couple of pics of the car. Or stated in a kinder and gentler way.... WTF Newbie, where do you think you are... on a Bimmer Board? Come on, give us an intro and post the %^&*!$@#& pics! Seriously, Welcome to Rennlist and Congrats on getting what sounds like (can't see it) a nice P-car! Hey Ray, how did I do? Dell, I was just trying to lull him into a false sense of security that he wasn't going to get caught!

POST 8Original post

You can use either. I used the 2.25 and took that picture that tim has to the muffler shop and I said "I want you to do this". That all I said. The muffler guy will know what you are showing him. You can go with 2 or 2.25 Some think it fits better with 2.25, but some stated that the real PSE are 2".

POST 9Original post

If they have them you can try to get 2.25" diameter pipes. I believe mine were 2" pipes.

POST 10Original post

Tim, you have PM... Please check. Thanks, -Bao.

POST 12Original post

It allows some of the exhaust gases to escape from chamber two (of the three chamber muffler) directly into the outlet pipe. Basically provides a shorter, less restrictive, and most importantly LESS MUFFLED way out for some of the exhaust gases.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the advice. I took the mufflers to my local shop. $100 and 2 hours later I have my poor man's PSE. The muffler guy did the pipes a little bit differently to "straighten the airflow". See the picture below - the black line was how my muffler guy did it. I don't know if that makes a difference to the sound or how that compares to the actual design of the PSE... my guess is that it shouldn't be that different. I didn't feel a lot of difference in the sound. It could be the fact that I only had the car for 5 days, had the stock exhaust for 1 day, on day 2 I did pep boys muffler bypass, and on day 5 I changed it to poor man's PSE. I thought the car had better throttle response... maybe it's placebo effect. But, I am glad the mufflers are back on, as the resonance with the muffler bypass is just way too annoying. Coming from working on e46 BMWs myself, I am absolutely AMAZED at how accessible everything is on a Porsche. I go under the car and almost everything is right there. I read about bolt on mods before I bought the car, but I really had no idea how easy it would be. It also makes the slippy slope that much more slippery, since everthing can be done so easily.

POST 15Original post

It is probably the fact that you had no mufflers on your car for the last 3 days that has minimuzed your perception of the PSE mod.
