Here's the deal, the engine is out for a reseal and there is approximately 60% left on clutch (so they say), do I replace clutch now just for the cost of clutch parts or wait thinking the engine may have to come out again before clutch goes?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Here's the deal, the engine is out for a reseal and there is approximately 60% left on clutch (so they say), do I replace clutch now just for the cost of clutch parts or wait thinking the engine may have to come out again before clutch goes?

POST 2Original post

If the clutch is grabbing fine, I don't know if changing the clutch now is really worth it. FYI, I've seen situation where one tech will say something like "you have 60% clutch left" and another will say it's fine as is and after driving it, say the clutch is in perfect working condition...

POST 3Original post

it depends, if you have 3000 mileso n the car and its at 60% maybne you should replace it. if you have put 40k miles on the clutch and its at 60% id leave it in. all depends on how hard you are on a clutch

POST 4Original post

Just do the math... How much labor would you be saving? How much do the clutch parts cost? How long do you think that labor savings would be deferred if you didn't do it? For example, on other cars that have timing belts...I typically do water pump ($150) and cam-seals ($5) because the labor is usually $600. thanks, Amir

POST 5Original post

Had the RMS replaced recently at 32K and my clutch was between 60-70%. Both the tech and the service manager felt that it would be a waste of money to replace the clutch. Like others have said, if you've been driving a stick for a long time and you know what you're doing, you don't do drop clutch burnouts and the car has a respectable amount of miles, then you should be good for 100K+ on your clutch. Listen to 99firehawk; he knows what he's talking about.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, to close this out, I went ahead and had them replace the clutch. Actually I misunderstood, but there was 40% approximately left on the clutch. This is a newly purchased car with 18ooo miles so I want to start with a fresh clutch and look forward to no problems.

POST 8Original post

That was probably a good decision, especially since you had only 40% remaining on the original clutch. Previous owner must have been hard on the clutch.
