Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

ALso I have seen used low mile manual transmissions go on ebay for as little at 3 grand so there are other options.

I sought advice from an expert independent P car machanic.........he recommended against the third party rebuild...........

Suggestion
With 7 years and nearly 100,000 miles is not exactly implausible for the transmission to go, especially depending on the use over those miles.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Car has been babied since new, no winters, no track time, all highway miles. Sounds like the input shaft bearing is toast. It makes a chirping sound when warm at idle.
Car has 92,000 miles. Rebuilt Tip S tranny is north of $10 grand installed.
No more Porsches for me............
Transmissions fail whether "automatic" or "manual". While the price does seem high, (I certainly wouldn't have expected that kind of coin) I don't think there are many places to get that kind of work done (AAMCO for instance). Unless you can find a wrecked car and pull it from there, you may be stuck.
tranny lists at 73xx$ install of 2k sounds about right if its the dealer
There are placecs that can rebuild them, i know 2 guys that had thier tips rebuilt by a local shop here
and they are as good as new for way way less .
Is the tranny leaking fluid?
on a side note, if you decide not to fix it and are intrested in selling let me know i may be intrested
The "re-manufactured" C4 Tip S tranny is quoted at $9,300.00. Then they have to install it. The "reman-new" unit will have a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty on it.
A slush box shouldn't fail after 100,000 miles on a $100,000 car..............I will pay to fix this one and keep both of the Porsches I own, because I really like them, but I am not going to purchase another one.

No warranty?
How about buying one right now and using it immediately? Has anyone done that (and is it legal)? I know that dealers don't do any inspections before they sell you warranties. You can buy one even over the phone.
That would be defined as fraud and given the $ involved, grand larceny at that. Nope. I have managed to live my life in a way that allows me avoid having to look over my shoulder. No reason to change now.
I have owned the car since new in 2000, and it has 92,000 miles on it. No warranty.
With 7 years and nearly 100,000 miles is not exactly implausible for the transmission to go, especially depending on the use over those miles. I'm sorry it happend to you. Then again, the next time it fails you should have a 14 year old car with nearly 200,000 miles, and they will have been spent in a far more enjoyable car than a Toyota Corolla
(even if the corolla has had NO repairs over its life)!
I cannot possibly be that much to fix it, maybe outright replacement is not the answer. Pull it yourself and see if it cannot be fixed with just replament parts. ALso I have seen used low mile manual transmissions go on ebay for as little at 3 grand so there are other options.
The deed is done.......thanks for the sentiments and suggestions, however.
I will feel lucky to get 200k miles out of this car, but that is my plan. Truth be told this is the first time I have spent any money on it out side of gas, oil, tires and filters. So $12,500 over 7 years is a fair deal......as long as nothing else major fails......
I just wanted to post the facts here to log the data for the renny members.
Without a transmission, the car is a paperweight........especially with 92k on it. Besides which, I really like the car and just want it back on the road.....
In any event, I have bought my last Porsche, so a trade-in option is not on the table.....
Another option is to call Sunset Imports, the MSRP is $7370.18USD so it might sell for ~$3500USD(?) and then have an independent shop install it or we can have an engine drop party. There are several people within 1-2 hours drive with a lift and a truck rental from U-Haul is only ~$50USD.
