Suggestion

I've heard the case persuasively made that relying on the knock sensor over time, allowing the car to run richer and with the timing retarded, is hard on a number of components.

If your engine does not knock and therefore retard the timing, you will see no benefit using a higher octane fuel.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone see any differences between using 91, 93 or 94 octane gas or knwo about any long term consequences for using the lower grade. I have a standard 2000 911 engine. Thanks

POST 2Original post

I doubt you would "harm" the car running on lower octane (even 87). However, the ECU will probably retard the timing to avoid "knock" so you will make less power. On the flip side, you will not gain any power running on 94. 93 is your best bet if it is available. If not (like California) 91 will work ok.

POST 4Original post

Let me add to this question, if I may: I've witnessed this subject hotly debated on other boards for other cars. I've heard the case persuasively made that relying on the knock sensor over time, allowing the car to run richer and with the timing retarded, is hard on a number of components. The catalysts are often cited as victims. Also, is it not true that the rated power of a 996 is given for 93 or 94 (can't recall which), and therefore running it even on 91 octane premium would cost some power? Would love a Porsche perspective on this...

POST 5Original post

If your engine does not knock and therefore retard the timing, you will see no benefit using a higher octane fuel. Simple test would be to fill your tank with 93 and reset your computer by disconnecting the negative cable for a few minutes. Then drivive the car around for a few miles, hook up your scanner and log your timing for a few hard runs up to redline. After you use up all the 93 gas, fill up with 91 and reapeat. If you see no difference, the 91 is fine for your car. Do the test in similar climate.

POST 6Original post

With the high compression ratios of our engines (3.6 is 11.3:1) significant retardation should take place (meaning some power loss) Porsche here recommend the higher octane rating, sticker under fuel lid, I like Shell Optimax which has apparently extra good additives
