Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought my 02 996 C4S 1 year ago with 3,800 miles. No issues with the car until recently. At 5200 miles i installed a PSS9.
Had it set on medium then after 200 miles went to full stiffness. Then at 6000 my exhaust started to rattle. I checked the exhaust pipes and they are not loose. It is a noise that is coming from the inside of the exhaust. It gets really bad when i release the pedal.
1) what to do next? I am out of warranty.
Sport Exhaust and call it day?
Thanks.
Mario
You know i recently had the same Problem. The Rattle from the Exhaust system. I get it at low speeds like 5-10 KMPH only when its cold after a while of driving it goes away.
My dealer just replace my Mufflers under Warrenty today. Will see how it works ou when i get her back tomorow. Since your out of Warrenty id get myself some new Aftermarket Mufflers
PS: What PSS9's did you use Turbo or C4?
Mario - Welcome to the Porsche Phunny Pharm! If your car is still under warranty, take it to the dealer and have them replace the mufflers. See if you can get them to order PSE and you make up the cost difference. That would be the cheapest way to get PSE.
Also, It is customary for "Newbies" to tell us a little about their car (color, options, mods) and to post pics. We LOVE pics!
Hey Alex, I'm back "on patrol!"
When the car is cold tap on the muffler and see if you hear the same rattle as when you drive. If so you probably have a broken baffle and the muffler will need replacing. I took this opportunity to upgrade my mufflers.
Mario, here's a possibility: I, too, had a similar broken or loose noise coming from my 02 996 "tailpipes." But actually the noise was coming from failing catalytic converters. The dealer replaced them. I believe that the cats are (almost always??) under warranty by law. Check this out and you might be lucky.
Let us know.
Thanks for all the input guys. I will post pick as soon as i get my member id #. I tried to "upload" my baby but you gotta pay first, so i just did. I am really uncomfortable driving with the noise. It sounds like my car is falling apart.
My car went into service 4/02 so it is out of warranty i guess. I will call local P-dealer asap. to find out if anything can be done.
Anyone have nice 19" for sale 3-piece Hre ie
I don't want to buy sport exhaust yet until i know which part is defective.
I have a rattle when I start driving from a standstill. Mine makes a "loose metal" rattle when I start driving then you can't hear once the car is moving. I originally thought it sounded like a loose heat shield or something.
I have PSE and I went under the car this morning and banged on whatever I could see. The mufflers all made no noise but the tailpipe ends rattled when I hit them with the heel of my hand. I guess I have to have new end pieces installed or can someone just properly weld the existing ones?
Same thing with me nothing is really making noise under the car, but when i hit the tailpipe tip it makes noise on the left one. The right one doesn't make any noise. Held a boot in front of both tailpipes no unusual noise. Called one dealer in the area they told me to bring it in it might be covered under the emmission part of the warranty. Another dealer told me it's not covered. I will try anyway.
Hey Mario,
First welcome...
I have the same droaning noise when i first got my 911.. preowned have 60K miles..
So i replaced it with aftermarket...Didnt see any leaks when Sharwerks, had it on the lift...the muffler prob gone bad it is coming from inside..never did figured out what it was
I have the same issue on my car. The description making reference to a sound similar to a loose heat shield or something is dead on. Mine is only on the left side, and as most have said, goes away once it warms up. In my case, it only does it on the last 500 or so RPM drop to idle. Dealer told me I need to replace the muffler. Well, I will deal with it as is, besides, I am seriously considering running straight pipes (aft of cats) as this car is way too quiet for my taste.
Mystery solved. Broken clamp that was holding the oem muffler. Made me buy Fabspeed, i thought it was a broken baffle inside. I'm glad i changed to Fabspeed what an improvment in sound.
I had the same issue about a year ago, except mine was replaced under warranty. I believe a TSB was published for this issue. I now have another rattle that appears to be coming from the catalytic converter.
Same problem with my 02 c4s with PSE. Took it into the stealer oh I mean dealer and first they thought it was the tip, nope. Then they thought it was the cats, nope. Now they say a weld or something broke loose inside the muffler, just on the right side, and they want $1,500 installed for it. Car just came out of factory warranty 2 weeks ago and PCNA has denied to fix it or even help with the ridiculous price for just 1 muffler. And the cpo warranty doesn't cover it, imagine that.
Stupid ?-Is the new muffler going to sound any different than the one with 20,000 miles on it? There is no reason to replace both of them is there?
How this happened is beyond me, dealer just says " well with high performance cars like these sometimes welds will rattle loose. Must be the same guy who designed the RMS did the mufflers too.
Its been like driving with a blown speaker for the past week!!
Can't wait for the next weld to rattle loose!
