Can I run the car to operating temp, put it on the lift and attempt to put a bit of fluid in?

To do the check properly, you have to have the porsche tester II to find out tranny temp; you need 30 -45 degrees CELCIUS (or check tranny temp through A/C display; on how to do this is on a different thread somewhere on the forum).

On checking the tranny fluid level, it is my understanding that there is a transparent tube/sight glass that shows the level and is externally viewable.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

its really not a diy job, is it leaking? why do you think its low. i can walk you through the procdure but the general rule is if its not leaking dont worry about it
Loren, nice write up.
The tranny started making a little chirping noise at idle, the other day. The car has 92,000 miles on it. I spoke to the dealer and he said it could be something as simple as it is low on fluid. (He said they do consume some fluid over time. My knowledgable friend says that is bunk, unless there is a vacuum modulator with a bad diaphram). With this milage, (according to the maintenance schedule) the tranny could use a service anyway, But I would really like a quick way to see if the tranny fluid is low.
Can I run the car to operating temp, put it on the lift and attempt to put a bit of fluid in? Any thoughts on the chirping noise? BTW I am not geting any kind of fault signal as regards the tranny.
are you sure its the trans making noises? noise is hot or cold, in gear or in park?
you could get it hot and try to shoot some fluid in, use porsche fluid and make sure its the right type
There isn't a dip stick to measure ATF level? Weird... There should be an electronic sensor at least if the dip stick is not allowed due to location. I wonder how much is an ATF change at dealer? It's a nice DIY.
OT, is there a differential oil in 996?
dj,
yes on the rear diff. here is the info on the tip and diff
Tiptronic Transmission Part Number 999.917.547.00 Automatic transmission fluid (20 liter container). Transmission fill: 9.0 liter. Transmission change: 3.5 liter.

Hey,
At least my left leg is not 'Arnold S.' huge and no calluses on the right palm, at least not from shifting.
Damn, I'm jealous but still a 'P' driver just with thumb calluses.

Yes, according to the manual, make sure the car is level on a lift or ground.
Car must be running in PARK.

Open plug at back of tranny underneath pan. If fluid runs out, too much fluid (highly unlikey at this point, but for future reference), if fluid does not run out, it may possibly need filling.
If you fill, make sure to run through all gears (1-5, R using buttons on wheel) and recheck.
You have to plug up before 45 degrees CELCIUS to be accurate. If temp is too high, fluid will be expanded giving false overfill situation. Turn engine off and wait a little while untill temp is back in range before reopening plug.
If fluid temp too low, will give a false underfill situation.
I read it here on one of the threads but I do not remember the title of it though. I will look for it later after I am not busy with school and post the title.
The thread with the A/C display of the parameters of the car is called "Engine Temp", I believe it on the 4th page. It has 4 pages of replies. Anyways, make sure you open the rear plug and not the forward plug becuase the forward plug is the DRAIN. Also, I forgot to say that you have to have a special tool to put the fluid back in the tranny that also tells how much you have put into it. It is best to have a dealer check it for you as most people dont have access to the pump to put more fluid back in.
Oh, I apologize, I thought it would display the tranny temp but I never actually tried to use it. I quickly ran through the list of parameters it would display and I swore it listed tranny temp...sorry. Tippy
