I called them at 8:30 and had the tires installed by 11:00 this morning.

I think I'll check with my local PCA chapter for advise on local tire shops.

From my personal experience and from others I know from the track we have found that their recommended installers are not the greatest.

If you find an installer- and I would most certainly start with the names on Tire Rack's recommended list, that has the 9700- I would use them.

If you live in SoCal, I recommend Wheel Enhancement
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's time for a new set of rear tires for my 996 C2. My BMW friend tells me he has had great expereince with Tire Rack. I understand that you can order the tires from them and they will ship them to a certified installer in my area. Any of you Rennlisters have experience with Tire Rack or would you suggest another vendor? Thanks in advance for your help.
Gary
You will develop a great familarity with Tire Rack if you keep the 996 :-)
They have the best prices and drop ship to good installers in a few days.
Sometimes it feels like im have a "frequent buyer" unofficial membership between the old NSX and the 996.
BTW: Damon is really helpful too
As far as getting you good tires delivered on time and at a good price TR is great. That's the easy part though. I'd be much more concerned about finding a local shop that's going to take care of your wheels and do a good job balancing. Usually the local Porsche club members know the best local shops. Or post your location. Someone on here might have a recommendation.
Personally I would pay a little extra and buy the tires locally to. Someday you'll be in a bind and need a freind in the tire business.

I have a local wheel and tire shop that's excellent. I bring them the tire rack price, including shipping, and ask them if they can match it, including tax. If they can match it, I buy it from them. Often, due to their overhead, they can't match the price. In those cases, I have the tires from tire rack delivered directly to me, and then i have the local shop install it. I trust these guys more than the tire rack certified guys several miles away. Tire rack will not ship to non-tire rack affiliated shops, but they will ship to you directly.
I got a flat last night on my BMW and I was planning on ordering 2 tires from Tire Rack (I have 18" wheels and it isn't too easy to find the right size tires). I made a couple calls and found a Firestone shop on 28th Ave and Peoria in North Phoenix that installed the tires for less than than it would have cost to get them from Tire Rack. I called them at 8:30 and had the tires installed by 11:00 this morning. They seemed to do a good job, the price was right and I didn't have wait for Tire Rack to deliver the tires. Just my .02.
Fast service and good prices are all good. However, if they damage your rims (and chain stores are notorious for that), you have just incurred several thousand dollars in losses. I would pay a few more dollars and go to a reputed tire mounter.
From my personal experience and from others I know from the track we have found that their recommended installers are not the greatest. Go with whom Rennlisters and reputable friends recommend.
Thanks for the input. Sounds like TR installers might not be the best. I think I'll check with my local PCA chapter for advise on local tire shops. Any Rennlisters have Phoenix area recommendations?

The Hunter GSP 9700 wheel balancing equipment is tops in the industry. If you find an installer- and I would most certainly start with the names on Tire Rack's recommended list, that has the 9700- I would use them. People who buy expensive gear like the Hunter will not screw up your wheels. I have had everything from blank stares to outright lies from local shops (CT) when asking if they have the 9700. Make sure, look at the machine. I drop ship all my wheels at home or the local installer here from Tire Rack. Great place.

Thanks for the suggestion of looking for Hunter GSP 9700 wheel balancing equipment. I will certainly use this info when searching for an installer.

I'm going to disagree slightly about seeking out particular equipment. In my experience shops often purchase high end equipment and the operators rely so heavily on the equipment they don't know the basics. I've had a lot of bad alignments from these kinds of shops. On the other hand the best work I've gotten has been from shops that do the alignment by hand. I'm not saying high tech equipment doesn't work, I'm just saying it doesn't compensate for poor labor quality.
