It was the $65 upgrade for POP, the false alarm eliminator was a bonus.
Leading evidence: '$65 upgrade' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is '$65 upgrade' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install complimentary new feature' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I just upgraded my valentine for the POP protection, and surprize, they installed a complimentary new feature:

He took off and I stayed at 30, passed the "photo radar in use" sign and watched him get flashed.

Suggestion
It calculates the direction from the difference in signal strength between front and rear detectors, using the KNOWN distance between the two sensors.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just upgraded my valentine for the POP protection, and surprize, they installed a complimentary new feature:
"When the signal identification system determines that a current warning is NOT, in fact, a radar threat, it notifies you with a "dee-dah-doo" sound and terminates the warning. At the same time the letter J will flash briefly"
Will come in handy for city driving.
Agreed. I have one that I got about a month ago (yes it still looks exactly the same).
One strange thing happened with this new V1 compared to one I have that's about a year old. There was a radar setup with a sign that flashed your speed in my neighborhood for a week or two. The new V1 picked it up a good 1/2 mile away, but the old one didn't register anything but a brief blip about 20 feet away. I put both detectors in the same car and tested it several times. Otherwise both detectors seem to pick up the same false alarms around town and pick up police radar from plenty far away. I called Valentine and they had no explanation.
You can go to the
Valentine Uprade Site
to see if your detector is enabled. Mine needed it and it was only 8 months old.
POP
is a k-mart quality police detector that turns on and off so fast that your detector doesn't pick it up. It is so fast that it is not even accurate. Some say it will not hold up in court. The reason I upgraded is because if I know the cop is using it, I can innocently ask to see the reading and then present that info to the judge. Hopefully, that will never happen, but for only $65 I thought the information could be useful.
I felt a little naked without my detector for a week, but it was a quick turn-around.
It is thinner than it was 5 years ago, it is about 1" thick now. Same esthetics, I doubt it will ever change, it is a military-like detectector designed and marketed by the electrical engineer owner (retired from escort in their hey-day). Besides, the oversized arrows are what makes this detector more useful than the others.
It would be cool if they offered a stealth version that could be mounted underneith the car....
the better idea of a stealth detector would be to separate the sensors from the unit and mount them in the front and rear windows. The problem is that there is a magnesium? casing that supposedly helps reduce interference, but i am sure it could be done. The main drawback that valentine loves to say, which is true- the higher the unit the farther the detection, hence the problem with bumper units because of hills etc.
The casing reduces interference, but any metal housing would do that. Faraday's Law. You'd have to digitize the signal and transmit it to the head unit. I think there's a unit that does that. They are fairly spendy.
I have both too. I just LOVE them. The old one, which I bought in 2000, saved me $330 today. I was next to a Honda at a light and got the double Ka beep. He took off and I stayed at 30, passed the "photo radar in use" sign and watched him get flashed. I figure the valentine has saved me literally thousands in fines and insurance.
I agree wholeheartedly. I haven't kept track, but I'm sure the savings is in the 1000's over the years here in metro Atlanta. In my opinion, all other detectors are in another class when compared to the V-1. I have upgraded once already, and am about to do so again. Can't beat that upgrade program.
True story .... had a Georgia HP officer stop me back in my 928 days to ask:
1. if I had a Valentine, since he was sure he was going to nail me, and
2. how I liked it ... as he had heard so much talk about them at the office.
As he chased me down for the stop, I could not figure out why it had failed ... but, as always, it had not.
The reason that there aren't any "remote" installations of the V1 is because the V1 only works as a SINGLE unit. The arrows of the V1 (its best feature, IMHO) displays the location of the radar - in front, side or to the back. It calculates the direction from the difference in signal strength between front and rear detectors, using the KNOWN distance between the two sensors. If you separated them and mounted them remotely, the unit would not know the exact distance between the two sensors.
I'm not an engineer, but this is what was told to me by an informed source....

That's just the unit in a nice blackout box with the v1 remote display and audio, nothing more. Nice box though. It might be cool to have a bracket on the back top of the rear windshield, but if it's lower you're sacrificing distance
I agree with you guys who would like to see a more ergonomic V1. The tight stack of red LEDs are very hard to differentiate. The warning panel needs work! jVm
I have a V1 and the new K40. They both work well but I love the stealth install of the k40. The remote is the size of a matchbox and you get a laser diffuser. It is $1,600 installed and you cannot move it from car to car. My remote is in the unused ashtray and the blue LEDs are in the lower edges of the tachometer. Check out their website.
