I'm curious if anyone know to what extent they rebuild the engines, what parts are replaced, what's inspected/tested?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I searched but didn't see anything on this rebuilder... does anyone have any information on the German rebuilder offering engines on eBay?

Thanks for the reply, but I think you misunderstood what I was asking... I was asking if anyone knew what "they" as in the German rebuilder, did as part of their process, not a genral questions of what members did to rebuild their engines.
FSI is going to be almost double the price. While I am well aware of FSI's excellence, are you as familiar with this German company to make your claim that an FSI engine is "superior"? I don't, hence my original question. Also, I'm in the US, I'm just looking at all options for rebuilt engines in the case I want to pick up a roller.
I am more aware of FSI's excellence because I spent 5 days there in 2010 for their 1st M96 engine rebuild class. Their rebuilt engines can not be improved, therefore they are superior.
Tony Callas has won the 24 hours of Le Mans and co-teaches the hands-on rebuild classes with Jake, so I'd say he's equal to FSI as an option in my mind. His prices are probably the same, however. Just speculation.
Thanks for the ideas.
Would love to find a roller like you did, but if you have been watching the forums, they are all asking $8-9K. Maybe they will get tired and go lower, but who knows. You definitely got lucky.
A nice low mile 03 just listed on FB for $7K, it looks to be in top shape and if I where in the market I'd be on it! $7K is never going to be the final sales price...Mine was listed at $8K and sat for six months before I talked some sense into the guy.
