Unless I get a great deal on used MAC/SnapOn on craigslist/ebay/etc I'll keep on buying Craftsman.

I don't buy Snap On or other trucks except for a few used Snap On torque wrenches.

I picked up a couple of used SnapOn 3/8 ratchets from a guy on a local buy and sell.

For something I use all the time, I prefer the polished teardrop ratchets which I bought from Sears.

I've gotten a few nice used tools to add to my box by keeping my eye on these outlets.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looks like I'm going to be changing my oil pressure sending unit so I'm in the market for a set of metric Crowfoot wrenches.
Since a lot of us are DIYers, I figured this forum would be a great place to get an idea of where to buy hand tools. Back in the day, I bought Craftsman at Sears but those days have passed. I avoid Amazon whenever possible. I tend to buy stuff like this at Home Depot, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm willing to pay a little bit more, but not a LOT more. I see GearWrench for sale at HD for $27 and the same set online at tool sites for $60-70, so no way I'll pay 2x for the same thing.
Specifically for the crow foot wrenches, I bought a set from Oreily's . They have 6 contact points which work very well instead of the other ones that make contacts at only 2 points. And they are cheap.
For other hand tools, I used to buy from Craftsman but no more. I buy Gearwrench and Tekton on line now. I don't buy Snap On or other trucks except for a few used Snap On torque wrenches. I have collected so many tools over the years that I normally don't need anything immediately and can wait a few days for new acquisitions.
You might try a quick check of Craigslist. I have found a fair number of high quality tools for very reasonable prices there. It's always a but hit and miss, but only takes a few minutes.
Lowes picked up Craftsman tools. Same no-hassle guarantee according to the employee I spoke to. Unless I get a great deal on used MAC/SnapOn on craigslist/ebay/etc I'll keep on buying Craftsman. I've read up a little on Harbor Freights Icon Tools, and they might be worthwhile looking into . . . not sure where they are made . . .
Mark!
Used to be a big Craftsman fan, but it's all Chinese sourced now, and you have to send the tool back at your expense to replace.
Several other good choices:
Harbor Freight - lifetime warranty on many of their hand tools, excellent prices, reasonable quality
Acme -

Tooltopia -

and of course, Amazon
Snap-On if I will be using it often or a critical part is involved. Craftsman otherwise, unless it's a onetime task & a Harbour freight tool will work, they have a better selection than they used to.
I too used to be 100% Craftsman but I've started venturing out. When I bought my house 10 years ago I found a pair of Kobalt (Lowe's brand) channel locks in the yard. To this day they're still my favorite and the grips are a lot nicer than the ones on my Craftsmans + they're heavier duty. I'm not completely sure but it looks like Irwin may make them for Lowe's. Not sure about their other products but I'd at least consider the Kobalt stuff if you're in the market.
Amazon, especially since the retail situation in Canada totally sucks.
I’ve had good luck with the Tekton brand: fairly cheap, but the quality is more than sufficient for a DIY mechanic.
Im a tool snob to put it mildly. I actually gave away the last of my real USA forged Craftsman tools I bought in the 80s.
I got the deal of the century on Williams tools on Amazon (Snap Ons industrial brand). I get other Williams tools at toolsdelivered dot com. All of their tools are US or Taiwan made and clearly labeled. The Taiwan tools are very good (way better than Chinese box store stuff) and priced fairly. I fill in special tools with SK, Snap On etc. Buy tools once!
If you're looking for Snap-On or higher quality - keep an eye on Offer Up, Craigslist, local Pawn Shops. I've gotten a few nice used tools to add to my box by keeping my eye on these outlets. Snap-on is such high quality that after cleaning them up you'd hardly believe they're second-hand.
+1 for the Tekton brand. I liked the Kobalt stuff that Lowes sold but it is going away in favor of Craftsman that, IMO, is Craftsman in name only. Certainly not the quality of the past.
I buy most hand tools used, and even new, on eBay.
I have Snap On, starting 30 years ago, Other than once in a while losing one, as good u can get.
Crowsfeet not needed much on 996, clutch slave cylinder,Oil press sender, better bought in 2mm increments in odd numbers unless getting the whole set.
...and with their lifetime warranty, they get fixed or replaced.
I picked up a couple of used SnapOn 3/8 ratchets from a guy on a local buy and sell. He threw in a flex head that had a couple of broken teeth and needed a new kit. Dropped it to my local SnapOn truck for a new kit, turns out they don't make that one anymore, so replaced it with a brand new one.
I actually don't like the feel of the Snap On ratchets in my hand. So I don't buy them. For something I use all the time, I prefer the polished teardrop ratchets which I bought from Sears. I had to have them replaced under warranty a couple times now and they only give me the rebuilt ones which continue to break. I need to find a new brand that feels the same in the hand.
