Luckily there was a Porsche dealer nearby so, used their restroom and left with my '99 C2.

Suggestion
I drove a nice C4 and then after testing another C2, I decided that I wanted that C4.

The actual 996 I bought was an impulse test-drive from a local guy.

I mentally gave up on the M3/M5 after my first Porsche test drive - a 2002 C2.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I started looking at 99's but wound up with an '01 to get the e-gas and interior updates while still getting the first generation aerokit and that all-important warranty.
I started looking at pre-owned Porsches two times... both times I wound up changing my mind at the last minute and buying new... go figure. However, I will research a month on a toilet paper brand switch.
Yup. Porsche/Audi dealer gave it to me as a loaner. Having sold our Boxster a few months earlier, we decided it was time to drop the Audi and get another P-Car.
Yep had a deposit on a new Boxter, drove a 993 Porsche and bought it. Got my deposit back. Traded the 993 on a 2002 Viper GTS, ACR on impulse.
Drove by a Porsche dealer a few months ago, looked at a new C4S, and drove home with the Porsche. Lefty the Viper with them. I gotta stop doing this
Mine certainly was. I had just sold my E500 back to Mercedes and was planning to wait until the spring. Saw a triple black c-4 cab with about $30K in options and pulled the trigger. I have driven it about 70 minutes since the weather in Northeast Ohio is terrible, but I am sure it will be a good time. Had a Boxster but felt it was underpowered.
Not an impulse buy.
I researched heavily and ended up placing an order for one made to my specifications that I picked up at the factory in Zuffenhausen. It's the best 996 I know (ie most options)
yup. was driving an 01 c4, perfectly happy with it, found there was an abundance of tt's last january, and next thing i know, i am doing my part to alleviate the oversupply.
No way.
I spent about 3 months researching what I wanted and looking for just the right car. I started looking at 99's but wound up with an '01 to get the e-gas and interior updates while still getting the first generation aerokit and that all-important warranty. I found it on eBay but purchased direct from the dealer.
Kind of...I was very happy with my 2001 Boxster S. then read reviews about the C4S. saw one in person. fell in love. reviewed financial statements. couldnt afford it put deposit down anyway. picked up car 3 months later. never looked back.
You can't afford not to buy this car!! HA!
BTW, You have my vote for the best looking garage... I wish I could do that to my garage but in the north east it would get destroyed.
How long did you have your cab and the BIG question, do you miss having a cab? Or is it too early to tell given the cab season hasn't hit yet?
I'm curious because although I like the style of the coupe, I thought I'd miss the open car.

I had researched and planned to purchase a pre-owned 993 C2, in fact I was on my way to look at one that I thought I might want to make an offer on when I had to take a pee. Luckily there was a Porsche dealer nearby so, used their restroom and left with my '99 C2. Got the car first then investigated the option code and service history - found that I got a GREAT car! Very stripped with just the essentials.... LSD, sports seats, RoW 030 suspension setup and 18" wheels.
Had decided on an M3 until I found I could get a used 996 for the same price. Spent 2 months researching and then 3 more months of online searching for the exact combo I was after. 5 months of agony, but it was all worth it!
Well, i am still a pretty young guy, I am 32. Since my first car at the tender age of 16 , i have always had a convertible of some sort. The truth is i know i will miss the conv, however i am sick of all the leaks, how dirty the car gets inside, and the wind noise.Dont get me wrong i still have a conv (winter car) 2002 Mustang GT Conv, so if i really have the need to go topless i could always drive the Stang. And besides if i hate the coupe that much, ill buy a cab.Lets be honest here whats 10 grand more. If i hate the coupe its gone
Definitely an impulse buy here. I wasn't even in the market to purchase a car. Somehow, we took a detour from the annual L.A. Auto Show and ended up at a Porsche dealer where I saw my Lapis 996 Coupe. I didn't purchase the car immediately... went home, drooled about it, and went back 2 days later to take her home. I was 24 at the time and haven't looked back since.
I had been scheming to re-acquire a Porsche for about a year. My plan was to first overwhelm the wife by getting her a new kitchen and then a new Subaru Outback in rapid succession (thereby depleting $40K from my piggy bank).
While she was still dewy-eyed, I began research in earnest, originally looking at the 993. The actual 996 I bought was an impulse test-drive from a local guy. I made up my mind after a 30 minute test romp. The car was a dream come true.
All in all, it was an expensive year, with nearly $100K spent, but worth every penny.
In fact, I'm off to the garage to fondle the car before I go to bed.

My e46 M3 got a flat tire that I couldn't inflate with the lame M-mobility system so I got it flat-bedded to the BMW-Porsche dealership and ended up driving home a 40th Anniversary 911. I've been all smiles since then.
I just inked my deal tonight for a 2000 C2 coupe 2 1/2 years after selling my '95 993. Looked long and hard for three months. Had a great deal lined up on a '99 C2 Cab for wholesale price, but no warranty. Car was a at a Jeep dealer, but he would take my Audi TT in trade. And while the car was nice, it was not exactly what I wanted, but the price was really, really good. While traveling in Europe last week and thinking it all over, saw an ad on the internet for the 2000 at another Jeep dealer. (Both cars traded in on Jeep Grand Cherokees. That is something to ponder.) Although the 2000 was relatively not as good a deal, it was more what I wanted. The bonus was it had 21,000 fewer miles, just had the 30,000 mile service done, a brand new set of Pirellis, an extended Porsche warranty, and 18" Classic rims instead of the Cab's 17"s. So even though the net was an extra $7000, it was actually a more attractive deal to me. I put a deposit on it with a credit card while walking through the Copenhagen airport on my way to catch a flight to Thailand.
I only got my first look at it tonight and it was basically like new. I can pick it up tomorrow, if the snow holds off long enough for me to drive it the 50 miles home. Anyone have a set of mounted snow tires they want to sell quick?
So yeah, maybe this buy was impulsive, but really only the final move. And it was still a really good deal since, according to my insurance company they would pay out about $6000 more than I am paying if I total it on the way home. All in all not a bad way to get back in the game.
My '99 996 was pure impulse. We were at the P-A dealer to buy my wife a new A4. I had seen the 996 w/ aerokit at the Detroit auto show a few months earlier and was quite taken with it. After we did the deal on the Audi, I started asking the salesman about the new 911 (996). At that time there was a 6 month waiting list but he had just had a customer cancel out of delivery on an Artic Silver C2 w/ aerokit. I took one look at the car and we ended up driving it home that night, after placing the order for the Audi. I was even able to get a few thousand off since we bought two cars that day. I then spent another $10K adding options like Litronics and Sport Design wheels that I would have gotten from the factory if I custom ordered the car, so the dealer made out like a bandit on me.
For my GT3, I was on the wait list for over a year and then waited another 6 months after ordering, so that one was definitely not impulse.

I went in to place a downpayment on a Boxster S order that I had already optioned out with the dealer. The dealer showed me the 8x10 promo pics of the C4S. I looked at the specs. I walked out with an order for the C4S. Yup, it was not only an impulse buy, but an impulse that was started by looking at a picture of the C4S.
My purchase was more a study in the suppression of impulsive. I mentally gave up on the M3/M5 after my first Porsche test drive - a 2002 C2. It was sooh nice. Sure I wanted it on the spot, but I managed to resist it and started to look for a used Porsche. It was a car that I always dreamt about. I wanted to buy from a private party, but virtually all cars on the market were at dealers, where the lease company had auctioned them. I found a lot of C2's on the market and began test driving used ones. As I was frightened to spend that much money, I had to look at enough to determine what I wanted and what kind of deal was reasonable. It was agony to negotiate for a car when you craved it. I drove a nice C4 and then after testing another C2, I decided that I wanted that C4. I.e PSM, Carbon fibre trim, Litronic, and especially the 18 inch 12 spoke wheels.
