if you were going to change the gauge faces you might want to have it done professionally but the only problem with changing the entire cluster is that you may have the wrong mileage showing and also you may have warranty or vin number issues.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I guess I'm just not as computer savvy as I thought i was. I've been searching over and over on here, renntech, 6speed, and flat6... is there something I'm missing here? How do I get the gauge cluster out of the car... everyone keeps referring to these diy's that have been posted here before but I can't find even one of them. is it because they are too old and off the system? I just got my new aluminum gauge cluster here and I want to install it to see how it looks. It looks like there's only two bolts to hold it in but how do you get to the bolts? PLEASE HELP~

POST 2Original post

push in the hazard light and pry out from surround edges with your fingers or putty knife, remove the plastic grill for cell phone mic which is on the instrument surround. There are 2 T20? torx screws that you have to remove, then lift out the whole instrument cluster including the hood, rest it on a towel as to not mar the leather and unplug the 3 cables on the back of cluster, rest is pretty self explanatory. are you changing the faces or got an entirely new cluster? if changing the faces you might want to take pics of where the needles sit so you dont have to recalibrate everything.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks raffi, i'm changing the entire cluster. i'll be sure to post pictures and a diy so other can find it easier.

POST 4Original post

Go to a Porsche garage and get it done professionally.... donnyJ

POST 5Original post

Some day a 996 owner will buy our DVD where we show how to do this on several cars. Plus we need the beer money for when our local Porsche group works on cars. The DVD cost far less than 1 broken part. Next parkman will want to know how to remove the hazzard switch and the connector to the switch, after he breaks the switch trying to pull it out the wrong way like you 996 owners tend to do and after he gives up trying to figure out how the connector is removed.

POST 6Original post

sorry parkman, i forgot to mention about the hazard switch. i didnt bother disconnecting it as i didnt find it necessary. you can just replace the cluster while the hazard is still connected. you can replace the entire cluster in less than 10 minutes. if you were going to change the gauge faces you might want to have it done professionally but the only problem with changing the entire cluster is that you may have the wrong mileage showing and also you may have warranty or vin number issues. also regarding the plastic mic grill, i used a paper clip which i bent one of the ends in a u shape and pulled it out. if you are gonna continue with other diy's like short shifter or more complicated things i would definitely pick up tool pant's cd, someone can write out everything in detail but nothing beats watching it done by someone else who knows what he's doing.

POST 7Original post

btw, i did a search on "instrument cluster removal" and alon has posted better instructions than my attempt. check it out. i keep trying to hyperlink but can figure, it out just try the search.

POST 8Original post

That $1k plus cluster is my baby. Hope raffi did not forgot to mention any thing else.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

where can you buy the dvd and how much?
