Riad, the stock radio was removed and in its place I installed an Alpine XM ready in dash CD-Receiver (CDA-7995).

In fact, I replaced the entire stock system with aftermarket components.

I am having reception issues with my 2000 (I posted thread on this too), but I was also thinking of upgrading to Satellite radio.
If anyone installed it in their 996 please tell me where you chose to put the unit and what brand you went with. I want something small and was thinking of putting it under the CD storage unit in the empty storage section.

If you can access the June 2002 issue of 911 & Porsche World (CHPublications, UK) there was an excellent article on the Becker in-car satnav system. Looks like the OE radio/cd but it can loose you anywhere in the world and a bit cheaper than the Porsche option!
And the climate controls don't end up in the footwell....
D-, if you can wait until January Alpine has a new "all in one" head unit with built in satellite reciever hitting the market. Check out this link:

I have the older Alpine XM tuner which was mounted in the trunk where the CD changer used to be and is connected to an Alpine XM ready Head Unit in the dash.

Today I had the XM commander installed in my car. This is simply a tuner/receiver and a remote control. The existing Porsche radio/cd stays. I had them custom mount the new unit (which is rather small) in the empty cubbyhole under the CD storage. If anyone is interested I can post a photo. It looks almost factory and like it belongs there. Most of these things look stupid in my opinion.
It works great. Sounds like CD and commercial free 100 channels.

I installed an Alpine CDA 9815 with XM ready. XM tuner in old amp bay in trunk. I then installed the antenna on the front dash even though they say not to. I could not think to put it on the outside of the car.....I will send some photos if you want.

The antenna was mounted under, yes under, the rear deck completely out of sight. Absolutley no reception problems whatsoever, and stealth!!
Do not try this with Sirius however, their signal is much weaker than XM and I have heard of reception problems even with the antenna mounted on top of the vehicle.

i also just had the xm commander installed and it's great!
mine is mounted on a small custom bracket just to the right of the emergency flasher. the antenna mounts with a strong magnet on the small flat space below the middle brake light. the antenna wire goes in thru this light housing.you'd never notice it if you weren't looking for it. the amp fits below the passenger seat. i thought the space below the cd storage was too low to allow you to shift stations easily. also i didn't want to give up my sunglass storage area.
i wish i'd done it sooner!
So when these are installed, just how are they wired to the head unit on those that were the stock units? Is there an auxillary input port, or something else such as a changer cable that you tap into?

Riad, the antenna is inside the cab under the rear deck, which is right behind the space behind the rear seats.
Bucket: XM all the way! My neighbor didn't listen to me and installed a Sirius system. Well, to make a long story short the Sirius system got returned and in went the XM system.
Ignacio: Absolutley correct! I'm hearing the stories more and more, and yes it costs more per month.
I've had XM since the first month it went active, over 2 years ago, and I've never had a problem. Not to mention, Alpine supports XM, and IMOH that's the only way to go for head units. Additionally, on Feb. 1st XM is going commercial free on all music channels, so the best is getting even better.
Bill, if you're going to keep the stock head unit then you'll need to get a satellite tuner with its own display unit, which is then wired to the stock head unit through an RF modulator. You'll have to mount the display unit, which is around 3" x 4" in the cab somewhere and then tune the radio to the designated modulation station, usually 88.1 > 88.9.
