Are there considerations/concerns when purchasing a '99 or '00 996 for use in DE events? i.e. ground clearance, oiling, etc.? I'm just getting started and would like to avoid potential problems or at least understand what issues might be costly to address.

Not that I'm aware of. I have a good number of track events under my belt in my trusty '99 C4 996. Probably close to 50 events, in fact. The best way to prevent excessive costs at the track is preventative maintenance and ensuring your car's ready for the track. Before the event make sure your car is in good shape before heading out. Check the brake pad thickness, oil level, coolant level, tire tread depth, etc. (here's a link to my site [disclaimer] to see a more complete list of items to check http://www.ncracing.org/logistics.html ). After the event, check the same things, clean it up, accelerate the oil change etc. See the link above for post-event stuff. While I've had no problems with my '99, or directly known anyone who has experienced problems with their 996, that doesn't mean others haven't experienced issues. There are some known problems with oil pick-up at high Gs, but you need to be running slicks. I run Hoosiers, and never saw the problem.
