crank it a few times, then put your nose to the tail pipe. Pull a plug wire/coil pack, hook it up to a spare plug and ground it, have an assistant crank the motor, while you look for spark.

I believe the PSM is the only way to check the immobolizer system. It's more likely that you missed a ground strap somewhere. Take a look through all your electrical connections and confirm that the ground points are all clean and secure.
