I had the cables marked, installed the cable end into the shiftlink, secured it with loctite, and everything just worked out...

Anybody know of a way to reset the light on their own?

Hopefully the dealer can get me in for a quick reset of the light.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I finaly got my B&M SSK in today. It is the unit that mounts inside the car under the console.
Any tricks to make getting this done go easier. I seem to recall hearing that the B&M directions forget a certain vital detail. I am also doing the Evo Shiftlink at the same time, so any hints on that would also be appreciated.
Thanks
The main thing to remember is to mark the cables as they insert into the blue and black plastic linkage. I found a small piece of tape will suffice. Other than that I would suggest adjustment per the Porsche short shift TSB. There should be some more info on

I answered your very same question 7 days ago on RennTech.

I now suggest you take your car to your local Porsche dealer and let them do it.
Actualy Jeff... I did not ask the same question. The question asked there was...
" Does anybody know of a DIY for the Shiftlink and for swapping out the handbrake and door sills?"
Here I am asking about tips and tricks for the install of a SSK and about the part that B&M forgot to put in their instructions.
Thanks again for your help and your kind suggestion to pay a visit to the local dealership.
Sloth,
I also had a B&M installed in my old C2.
The guy who did it, DID NOT have that special tool that ensures that the shift lever is at Top Dead Centre.
If it isn't, you will have problems shifting, especially with first gear and reverse.
Sorry. Bad mood yesterday.
I have pictures on renntech on how to do it the Porsche way which does not involve marking the cables. The door sills just pull off as they are held down with double faced tape. 4 13mm nuts hold the brake lever. You will see a yoke on the lever with 2 13mm nuts you need to remove. Adjust to 4 clicks. All except the sills covered on my DVD.
Installation of the SSK and the shiftlink could not have gone smoother. I followed the directions (and remembered to mark the cables) and everything lined up correctly the first time... the N position rests right between the 3rd & 4th gate. I have never shifted a B&M, while notchy it certainly feels direct and the throws very short..
Those with GT3 seats... life is a lot easier when the passenger seat is removed. The only problem is that I started the car while taken apart to test the action of the shifter.... bingo, airbag light. Hopefully the dealer can get me in for a quick reset of the light. Anybody know of a way to reset the light on their own?
It is a tight fit with GT3 seats but the console can be removed with the seats still in.
Only the PST2 can turn off the light.
How did you adjust the cable that goes into the shiftlink. The way I suggested or just trial and error until the lever was in neutral and the gears worked?
Jeff,
I had spoken to the guys at Evo. They said it was already adjusted and to just swap it as part of the SSK install. They suggested 5-7 threads. I had the cables marked, installed the cable end into the shiftlink, secured it with loctite, and everything just worked out... no adjustment was needed for N and the rest of the gears to work. Perhaps I was just lucky. My digicam broke last week otherwise I would have taken some pix.
I just want to feel somebody elses B&M for comparison. N falls in the 3 to 4 gate but it sometimes gets hung up going from 2 to 3... I am going to give it some time as I think I just need to get used to it.
Sloth: The GT3 shifter is supposed to be a shorter throw than a stock 996 shifter. How much reduction do you think you got from going with the B&M shifter?
Glad to see you got everything in without a hitch Max. Give the shifter some time to break in...mine loosened up a bit after awhile and shifts became easier. As said above you need a PST2 to turn that light off...I wish you were closer to us as it could be done in about 30secs...o well another trip to the dealer
. I can't wait to see all you guys in a few weeks!! Are you going to Rolex Daytona?? I have the option for pit passes with our partner (Orbit) and I am not sure if I am going to go....worth it???
Regards,
Evan (Freezing in NY
)
The B&M is supposed to be 30% over the standard Carrera. not sure what the reduction is for the GT3. All I can say is that the throws are very short. Come up to Orlando and you can check it out for yourself.
Hey Ev,
Glad to hear it will loosen up a bit. I am going to try to drop by the dealer or local shop to get the light reset. Hopefully they will let me come down and get it done instead of setting an appointment for me to leave it with them. I managed to get some single event credentials for Daytona and will be there on Friday working the crew with one of the cup teams. Come up for the Rolex, always a good time. Plenty of gorgous cars to drool over. Stay warm and see you in a few weeks. Next project... replace the door sills... oooh fun!
