Hello all,
I have a very important question. I am shipping my car from Washington DC (McLean) to Dubai and need a reputable shipper to complete this for me. I have done some homework and gotten quotes but would be a lot more comfortable if anyone who has shipped any car overseas can share thier experiences and 'what to do' and 'what not to do'.
I am getting third part insurance (recommended by my current insurance agent) and am looking to sort this whole thing out by the first week of February.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the tip. I will look into these guys and I know that K&N is a very reputable (my company uses them for worldwide logistics support). I have gotten quotes from:
- Ocean Frieght Forwarder
- AA Autotransport
- Access Cargo
- Moverquest

Never heard of any of those four. Further, if I may, three additional thoughts:
1. there are many less than honorable shipping firms out there and I would be very tempted to go with a known quantity -- oftentimes the least expensive can become the most expensive;
2. as every shipping firm relies of a myriad of people -- some of them beyond their control, carefully check the vehicle for damage upon receipt and do not sign the paperwork which, somewhere in the fine print, stipulates no damage unless you are sure this is so;
3. get quotes on shipping insurance from your own broker/agent as well as from the shipping company -- I had an experience wherein a shipping company attempted to charge me $1750 for coverage that I obtained through my homeowner's policy for less than $50 (no, this is not a misprint).
Sometime in late 2003 the New York Times had an article in their Friday Escapes section about shipping cars overseas and they mentioned a number of companies who specialize. You can go to nytimes.com and do a search and download the article for about $3.
Take detailed photographs of your entire Porsche, inside and out, just prior to shipment. The photographs must be photo-dated. You may also photograph [close up] the front page of your local newspaper as it rests on the hood of your car. This will help negate claims of pre-existing damage by a shipper if a claim does occur.

3 weeks on the boat, and 1 week to handle the docs...
remember, that is from west coast to Europe trough the panama canal...
you are east coast, but have to go trough Meditarean...
