Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, I have just bought a 996 Turbo Cabriolet which needs a few jobs doing. First on the list is to fit a steering angle sensor, because for some unknown reason, it was removed from the car before my ownership. I have removed the steering wheel and clamp bolt on the uj linkage in the area where the sensor fits. I am unable to remove the steering column from the joint, although the splines of the shaft do slide out about half way. Can any one advise me of the correct process for removing the column to allow me to install the steering angle sensor?

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have pulled the steering wheel and am starting to dig down towards the linkage, any guidance you have would be appreciated

POST 3Original post

I was able to remove the steering angle sensor on my 2002 996 by pulling the steering column back (using the adjustment) then slide the universal joint off the steering column. Then I could slide the steering angle sensor off the column and replace it with another one. It was time consuming and I thought about removing the steering column but after I removed the mounting bolts I could not get the steering column to come out of the car so I worked to get the universal joint loose and was successful. Good luck with it. Mark

As Mark has said above, I too was able to slide the steering column and linkage going through the the steering rack apart just enough to slide on the steering angle sensor. It is a bit fiddly and you're working in a tight space in the footwell, on your back, but there is no need to remove the steering column. Good luck Doug.

POST 5Original post

It isn’t easy and the first time it took me 3 hrs. Found that the used steering angle sensor I changed it with made no difference. The second time it only took me 45 minutes. I also found that it could not be calibrated with many aftermarket scan tools. Ended u-[p having to use a PIWIS. To calibrate it. I wish I was younger and more flexible. Mark

Ive got a (supposedly) good steering angle sensor if I need it, but Im not convinced that the one in the car is bad. I think the guys that did the alignment screwed something up and didnt know how to fix it. I remember them mentioning that the steering rack wasnt centered properly, so they fixed it😏 too bad they cant fix my ABS & PSM lights F#%%%^^*^% cK!!! 🤣
