So, Porsche UK have agreed to replace my gearbox with a new one (normally about 8k + 17.5% VAT fitted) under their good will scheme.

The other is a used gearbox with 8,000 miles of use (abuse?), has been through a fire, and less warranty, possibly replaced with another used/salvaged one if this one goes caput.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So, Porsche UK have agreed to replace my gearbox with a new one (normally about 8k + 17.5% VAT fitted) under their good will scheme.
However they have asked that i contribute 3,300 + 17.5 % VAT towards the cost. They would give 2 years warranty on the new gearbox.
However, I have found a Porsche specialist salvage yard with a low mileage gearbox (8,000 miles from a front fire damaged car, no accident) for only 1500 all inclusive. And Tech9, a local independant said they would fit it for 230. The salvage yard have said they will guarantee the gearbox for replacement for 12 months.
My car is out of warranty.
So my dilema is do I pay the Porsche dealer 3,300 + 17 % VAT
or
Do I take a chance with the low mileage gearbox from the salvage yard
and pay 1730 all inclusive fitted by a reputable independent.
I would save myself 1570 if I did it the cheaper way. But is this a clever or stupid thing to do.
I would go for the Porsche replacement unit and get the warranty. The Getrag unit in the 996 is not the best gearbox out there and a used one from a salvage yard may or may not be in good enough condition.
I'm with Viken. It's a brand new gearbox, put in by the Porsche service, with a Porsche warranty. The other is a used gearbox with 8,000 miles of use (abuse?), has been through a fire, and less warranty, possibly replaced with another used/salvaged one if this one goes caput. Peace of mind is worth the cost diff.
My vote is for a dealer. 1500 pounds sound like a lot of money, but in context of P-car it's chump change.
Think if you decide to sell your SCO stock and upgrade to TT, the warranty might help resale...
OK guys thanks for the input. I thought as much. It's what i thought too but just needed to be convinced more.
BTW: Gery, what makes you think I have any SCO stock?
Think "SCO User" instead of "Scouser". Combined with the Unix license tag avatar I could see someone thinking you're an SCO Unix fan and potential stockholder. Personally, I thought I remembered "Scouser" as some sort of UK slang, but I never thought about it much.
Bob
Of course I knew that and was joking. Although I am an old time Unix hack I am not, contrary to my avatar and name may infer, an SCO user. However, I have authored some books about SCO UnixWare. But the name Scouser is Liverpudlian slang for a person born in Liverpool. Akin to a Cockney is slang for someone born in London (actually within the sound of Bow Bells, St Mary Lee Bow church I believe). So, you are correct in your assumption
I am always dubious about claims made by salvage yards but in this case the savings speak for themselves. Also you may decide in under 12 months time to get another car which means the next owner benefits from the more expensive gearbox. Good luck with your decision and thanks for your help when my car wouldnt start! Amazing what a blown 7.5 amp fuse can do!
