Man I use the auto car wash and I run 18's with 285/30 rears and yes if not aligned they have to line up the car to match the track.

Im sure Porsche uses similar paint as other manufacturers, so why are you worried about damange?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Are the 18" rims too wide to fit on carwash tracks? I will hand wash mostly, P-Gods please forgive if I take it to a carwash on rare occastions
Thanks for any info... and these would be the factory 18" rims on the 996.
I took my BMW 740i sport to the car wash for 4 years and never had a problem. It had 18" wheels. My E55 had the rear drivers side wheel damaged at the same car wash. The wheel was an inch wider, and the tires were wider and much lower profile. They replaced the wheel, and the manager told me that they end up damaging 2 or 3 wheels a year.
I would never take my Carrera to a car wash because I don't want the paint damaged. Plus with the 18" Carrera wheels, the way the part of the spokes that connect to the rim of the wheel point out, and the fact that the wheels are very wide and tires very low profile, I'd be very concerned about wheel damage.
Thats what I was afraid of, not so much the rims but the paint. The rims stick out a bit, but those 285/35 (I think it is) still fit on the carwash tracks.
But whats with the paint? Im sure Porsche uses similar paint as other manufacturers, so why are you worried about damange?
TIA,
Dek
The rear wheels will fit in the tracks, but there's so little room for error. The most critical part is when they drive the car onto the tracks--they need to line up the car just right or they'll ding the wheel.
Regarding the paint, although Porsche paint seems to get more stone chips than my other cars did, that's not the reason I brought my 740i & E55 to the car wash and not my Carreras. It's just that I was less concerned about getting swirls and scratches with the BMW & Mercedes!
I scratched my rear left rim seriously in the automatic car wash.. I now either take it to a manual washing station or to an auto car wash that moves itself back and forth (brushless) instead of pushing the car from the wheels.. This type of machine does not have wheel tracks to destroy the rims..

Man I use the auto car wash and I run 18's with 285/30 rears and yes if not aligned they have to line up the car to match the track. Since I suffer from Curb Ra****is(cortizone cream doesn't seem to work) so auto washers don't worry me : ) Regards. Mike
This topic recenlty came up in another thread...
I have been running my c2 cab through an autowash at least 1x a week for the 7 months i've had it and had no scratches at all. It has 18x10's on it. I have sport classic wheels and one thing i noticed is they are fairly well recessed back from the tire. The other day I was looking at 18" turbo twist wheels at the dealer and I noticed there was very little recess.
I think the amount of recess is the key
I took mine thru twice and never ever again. I have 18" Turbo ll wheels with 285 rears and the tire side wall was gouged and the inside of the wheel was scraped badly. Never ever again.
I have found the Porsche paintwork very good and Have no stone chips yet, metallic Mercedes are crap within a few weeks mine looked like an arial view of an ants colony.

This is the machine i was reffering to.. doesnt even touch the car...
But the result is very poor, the heavy sticky dust doesnt go out of the paint... i think i will stick to manual washing
