Granted they have a tiny bit more torque (chipped) but my best time in the s4 (stage 2) that i did matched the first time i ever ran the 996 at the track.

My 1999 car has a 3.6 in it custom tune and nearly all the important bolt ons and it makes 299hp at the wheels on a dyno used to check racecars for a HP vs Weight series (NASA racing).

If you yourself are a good wrench it can be a DIY but you will need someone to retune your ECU for it to run correctly.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OP: your buddy would lose very badly.
let me guess, some friend of yours or some guy in a S4 has challenged you, or beat you on the road.
Now you want to assess if your C4s will be competitive.
Don't go there - let the Audi driver race the BMW and Subarus
Hahaha I love this place! seriously!
We didn't race or anything, but he mentioned he could beat me on a serious note. I just wanted to pass it through to you experts. Initially I thought no way and my gut feeling was correct. I have never been in a more responsive car on turns/corners then the C4S. I wanted to make sure 100% off a straight line that it could out-run a S4, which it does indeed. I'll save my gas for a Vette I guess
Turbo AWD car w/hidden boost controller and/or good driver with good launch will get a lot of rwd/fwd cars from 0-60.
Any decent AWD driver can launch at 1.6-1.8 00-60ft times vs 2.0-2.4 for your avg rwd driver. Plus in my experience, there are a lot of dumb high hp rwd car owners out there. It seems like the higher the hp they have, the lower the brain cell count.
I can't believe I'm talking about this on a Porsche forum. I'll shutup now...
"Damn it's true! these cars are beasts! sorry for the dumb question..... now I have bragging rights!"
^ I'd kick your a## .. with one or the other
But seriously if you did not recognize my wagon early on, you'd be in trouble...
A party in the know
Yeah the 01 S4 is a good platform, but it is not a Porsche, esp in the suspension and brakes dept...
God, the brakes - on/off switches.
I will say this, tho, the B5 S4 is a great road car bec/ it is not overpowered for our roads and speed limits. Generally fun and thats why I've kept her..
[Above poster, I guess you've missed the joke.... ?? ]
I love Porsches and know a fair bit about them, but know almost nothing about other German cars. I had to google S4, and found out that it's an Audi. Maybe I should have known as my younger brother was a GM at an Audi dealer and works for a Porsche/Audi dealership.
Why do drivers in other German cars have such an attitude when you drive a Porsche? I could never understand it and still don't. My DD is a Jeep, when it dies I think I'll go Subaru, absolutely no interest in Audi, BMW or MB, I know, I don't get it.
That is the truth. Even if he says he is stock, the car is probably at least chipped. I think you will have trouble beating a chipped S4. The S4 is easier to launch and would beat a 996 in just about any roll-on due to the tq. If you are talking about an actual 1/4 mile track, you will need to practice with your car before you run him.
I love my Porsche, but you can't beat a B5 S4 Avant for a daily/trip car. Ours just turned over 218k miles! Hauls the dogs, the bikes and the box with ease.
You're living vicariously through other members' experiences. You want my advice, settle it at the drag strip. It's one thing to quote mag numbers and read the experiences from other members, it's another thing if you can replicate those numbers. Afterall, a really great car can perform horribly with an awful driver.

Trailered my car to the US a few weeks ago for a track trip. After the formal questions, one border guard asks: "What do you do in the 1/4 mile?".
My response: "I don't do drag racing. My car actually turns."
With a laugh they waved me through.
I'm telling you its alot harder to launch the s4. Granted they have a tiny bit more torque (chipped) but my best time in the s4 (stage 2) that i did matched the first time i ever ran the 996 at the track. Honestly they are both pretty slow when it comes to driving in a straight line. Plus its not that fun...
I hate trying to accelerate hard in the S4. The notchy shifter and typical VAG clutch engagement make running up through the gears less fun than it should be.
In a full-on acceleration contest, from launch to, say, 120, my 996 is still faster than the chipped S4. Where the S4 really shines is in roll-on acceleration. When we first chipped it, back when it was new, we did some informal in-gear times. Even fully-loaded, the S4 was significantly faster in any gear than published magazine times for the (then new) Mk2 996.
Truth. This is what makes the car fun - very 'point and shoot'. That is also what I meant in my op by "recognize".
OT but its nice to see other S4 wagons.
A true 'wolf in sheep's clothing' .
i know i was running low 9's (in the 1/8 mile) during my first trip to the track in my s4. Which was chipped, full exhaust, light weight flywheel with downpipes. I think it was pushing about 18 psi at maximum boost IIRC.
In my 996 with the mods noted in my sig... my first run in the 1/8 was a 9.2 secs. BTW my first time driving the car at a track. I bet i could have been in the mid 8's.
I think that an 11 second 3.4 car with bolts ons is very wishful thinking.
My 1999 car has a 3.6 in it custom tune and nearly all the important bolt ons and it makes 299hp at the wheels on a dyno used to check racecars for a HP vs Weight series (NASA racing). Therefore; conservative.
I thought that I turned a 12.6 but just double checked and it was a 12.3 in the 1/4 mile (Nearly 2 years ago).
The #'s were 12.3 seconds in the 1/4 mile at 116mph.
I was super easy on the clutch taking off in 1st so a terrible 60ft time but quick 1/8 mile speed at 92. The 0-100 was pretty good too at 9.9 seconds
I sheered off an axle on my last run trying to improve my launch, not recommended.
I would need to drop 400 lbs and gain about 40 more real hp at the wheels to be in the high 11s. Not likely without head work and cams.
For the record; I am not a drag racer, just went out for some fun to see what the car would do after an engine swap.

Any Idea what your 60ft was? I always figured a full bolt on well tuned 3.4 ~280whp would cut about 12.5's with a really good driver. This makes me think maybe 12.3's with really sticky tires and a good launch.
60ft ET was low 2s. not in front of the data right now.
Also a 3.4 at 280rwhp is at the top end of the spectrum with just bolt on upgrades and not the norm according to the guys building Spec996 race cars. About the only way to get to that # on a 3.4 bolt -on would be to re-time the engine to properly synchronize and time both banks which almost nobody does.
The 3.6L motor is good for so much more HP most due to the VC plus. At 299RWHP I am actually still running quite rich. I have no interest in developing the car further so it will stay as is.
2 years ago the process was not super well known, nowadays easy peasy.
Just work with a shop that absolutely has done it and not just read about it. And it doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg. The cost was between 11K and 15K depending on new motor vs used. I was very much on the low side of that figure.
Depending on the year car you have will determine all your options and costs. You just need to make the tradeoffs.
If you yourself are a good wrench it can be a DIY but you will need someone to retune your ECU for it to run correctly. There are lots more folks now to do that too. Best if you can take the car to them for the tuning to happen on a dyno for the best result.
-Paul
My Audi A6 Avant will not beat ANY car in the 1/4 mile ... unless ... we are runing on a Glazier! Then with my Ice tires we are ready to take on the world - and have the Dog and the Box and the Bikes come along for the trip.
Late to the party, but I have an 03 C4S and my wife has a 2000 S4 TIP. We haven't run them head-to-head but my butt says the C4S is much faster. It's not even close.
Well, low/mid 12's would not surprise me as my "drag strip" descends at about 3 degrees. The runs I did this on were "very" abusive to my drivetrain to be sure. I definitely wasn't being ginger. I believe my mentality at the time was "Lets see if we can tear something up".. alas nothing broke and the nordic Porsche gods laughed at me that day.
On a side note drag racing is definitely not how the engineers at Porsche intended the 911 to be driven.

I've had a few Porsches a Z4 M Coupe and now a 2010 (B8) S4. The S4 is faster stock in straight line than any car I've had before...and pretty easy to modify and make even faster...
For corner work, still miss my 986S. And the 930 was a blast...so was the Z4M.
Cheers
Far from stock...

Its funny theres a saying when it comes to B5 owners..."half the time the motors in the car and half the time the motors out of the car"...a stg3 S4 will be putting out anywhere from 450-500+ hp.....now you put a modified 996 turbo against a modified S4...then we will see.
those s4's above are super modded. A chipped b5 with bolt-ons will only yield around 300 hp.. You need upgraded ECU's and Bigger Turbos to get the 500 hp range. Plus you can't really compare an N/A car to a Turbo car anyway.
Here's a 4S I hope your car never acts like. The guy on the bike besides being as wreckless as the 4S end up shutting down the engine on hot vavles worse yet. It just drove it home how bad off they were. Taiwan I guess has lousy drivers. The bike should of been able to stay in his lane and ripped thing up. It wouldn't surprise me if both these guys are dead now.

I'll stick with Porsches. And girls.
