Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
It's probably a little bit noisier to have on than the soft top, and it's really isn't any better insulated, at least against the cold.
Leading evidence: 'little bit noisier' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'little bit noisier' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace hands without the top, etc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Or, they leave the top at the dealer and the car changes hands without the top, etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Jason -- when I was shopping for my cab, at least two dealers told me they had a number of hardtops gathering dust from owners who didn't want them. There's a guy who sells them new on Ebay for $1200. You might offer $500 cash and walk away, then see if they call you back. From what I gather, lots of dealers hate having them around, they just take up space and they'll never get rid of them. And how much demand could there be where you are?
I'm surprised you'd want it, living in AZ. It's probably a little bit noisier to have on than the soft top, and it's really isn't any better insulated, at least against the cold. And it's not a one-man job to put it on or take it off, either. Mine's on for the winter, but if it weren't for the need to scrape ice off the back window here in Boston, I wouldn't use it.

thanks for your help guys!
1) my reaons for wanting one are a)i kinda like the look with it on b)not for winter here where you rarely need the soft top up but for summer when the temps never go much lower than 100!
2)scouser the ebay guy doesn't have lapis blue
thanks though!!!
3)they are giving me the stand too.
4)they have only 2 tops left speed yellow and lapis blue (that we could find in the stock room anyway)
i will call tucson porsche today to se if they have one
Guys - I have a C4S Cab on order, and didn't go with the hardtop. If I decide I want one later, couldn't I buy any color and then paint it Atlas Grey to match?
Thanks
J
Hi guys,
Living in Europe, I'm surprised to read that the Hard Top doesn't seem to come as standard in the States. Is that really so? Here all 996 cabs are sold with Hard Tops as standard and C4S and Turbo Cabs also come with the optional wind deflector.
Hard tops are standard here, as well, but many people order the "hardtop delete" option if they don't want the top. Or, they leave the top at the dealer and the car changes hands without the top, etc.

Thanks for the info. I guess the "hardtop delete" reduces the purchase price of the car, right? Otherwise there would be no sense in not having the hard top...
Hi all Here is my .2 cents. In Canada , the hardtop delete option is worth
$ 2190.00.Hardly worth it, i know that if you want to order one from parts it would cost around $ 5000.00 plus paint and all that other stuff
I bought a hardtop from some guy in NJ, had it painted to match. The top cost $500.
If you are not buying the top locally, shipping can be as much as the top. In the end, $900 for the proper color and stand is worth it.
just my $.02
