I'm not sure when the battery was changed last but it doesn't look OEM to me.
Leading evidence: 'Replace last' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Trickle wouldn't bring it back up, so I hooked the cables up to my other car; kept that car running for about 30 minutes, then cranked up the Pcar and it worked ok.

For some reason I run into that problem and used the one that came with the car and returned the one I bought with the battery.

I used the Optima because there is no battery gas problem so you won't need to use the tube anymore.

Or use a 2nd battery/jumpers to keep the car powered while you change the battery.

One other concern when you change the battery, is that you should have the radio code on hand, as with complete power removal you will need to reset it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I managed to start it yesterday with the help of a handle held batter jumper but it didn't work this morning.
I've been away on business for the past 2 months and now my car won't start. I can hear clicking when I turn the key but nothing
. It was a last minute thing (my trip) I didn't even get the chance to hook up the trickle charger to the battery! I managed to start it yesterday with the help of a handle held batter jumper but it didn't work this morning. I hope the trickle charger works. If not, do I have to go the dealer to change the battery or can I simply buy another battery and make the change myself? Is there anything I should be aware of?
Thanks.
A trickle charger put out less than an amp. It is designed to to keep a fully charged battery in good condition charged. With a dead or bad battery you may never get it up to a level strong enough to start the car. If you want to charge it try a 10 amp charger.
If you need to replace it it is just a standard group size 48 battery that is sold by many companies. Bought mine from AutoZone 2 years ago for $60. Jeff
I would either go with the OEM or a sealed battery like optima. There are battery gas venting issues you will run into if you buy any battery from a autoparts store. You want to be especially careful because the battery is located right next to the cabin air filter. I put an Optima red top in mine with no problems.

Thanks everyone. I did end up charging the battery with a 10amp charger. This started the car after 4 hours. I then took a 2 hour drive, when I got home I hooked up the trickle charger for another 3 hours. I'll try to start it tomorrow, hopefully the battery will hold the charge. If not, where can I get an Optima battery? I've been hearing some good things about the Optima. I saw it somewhere once, they look smaller then the one I have. I'm not sure when the battery was changed last but it doesn't look OEM to me.
Thanks for your replies.
Any special adapter for the Optima? I've had an Optima in my 68 Mustang for years. Best battery I ever bought. No problems or adapters for 2003 Porsche? Thanks
Nope, In some DIY articles it says you need to get a longer negative cable and replace it. For some reason I run into that problem and used the one that came with the car and returned the one I bought with the battery. The tray in the 996 is meant to specifically fit the OEM porsche battery so you will need to figure out a way to mount it. In one DIY the guy mounted the battery to an aluminum cutout. The cutout was roughly the same shape as the OEM battery. I removed the tray drilled a hole and secured the tray directly to the battery and then reinstalled the tray. The Optima has some holes on the bottom. You probably don't need to really attach it but I didn't like the idea of my battery sliding around. There is a clear tube attached to the OEM battery which vents battery gases away from the car. If you notice, the cabin filter is right next to the battery hence the vent tube. I used the Optima because there is no battery gas problem so you won't need to use the tube anymore.

My battery went dead a couple of months ago when I left the lights on all weekend. Trickle wouldn't bring it back up, so I hooked the cables up to my other car; kept that car running for about 30 minutes, then cranked up the Pcar and it worked ok. Now, I not only turn out the lights, but use a trickle charger when I'm gone for more than a few days.
