I've changed the entire column on my 03 C4S and seen how it works.
Leading evidence: 'Replace entire column' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust wheel' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Do all 996 C2s have the ability to adjust the wheel?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 04 C2 steering column will not adjust in or out. The locking clamp does open and close but I am unable to move the steering wheel in or out. Do all 996 C2s have the ability to adjust the wheel? I am not talking about up or down. Seems very strange. Thanks
Wow! Thats new to me as mine has never moved in & out I guess its supposed to? I guess this belongs in the things you never knew about your 996 thread
On my 2002 C4 Cab, the steering wheel locking clamp lever is stuck in closed position and does not move. I have applied enough force to rotate it clockwise (downward) just short of breaking point (I assume) and am afraid any more force may break the lever. Any suggestions?
FYI, the last time I moved the steering wheel up or down (no in and out feature) was some 4-5 years ago.
The ignition switch works fine, as designed.
TIA, Bahman
The column only goes in/out. There is no up/down adjustment on that 996.
I would squirt WD40 in the mechanism every couple hours (with a towel underneath to catch any drips) and leave it overnight. Then try again (pushing in or pulling out. Note that full travel is only 1-plus inches.)
I've changed the entire column on my 03 C4S and seen how it works. I can't imagine damage or misalignment, only a friction bind.
mtnroads,
Thank you for your suggestion.
On my car, the locking clamp lever is frozen in place and does not budge. I am looking for ways to free it up so I can move the steering wheel up or down. FWIW, my steering wheel only moves up and down and NOT in and out.
Im not sure whats happening here...u say its frozen and doesnt move so how do u know it only moves up and down? Had it done it before?
The porsche 996 has never been made with a steering colmn that moves up and down. From the factory it has only pulled in and out. The community is concerned or confused on how u have a tilt function with your column.
As far as freeing the handle u may have to dissassemble steering wheel and trims to get to the mechanisms.
I'm afraid what you have said in your last sentence is what must be done.
The handle must be freed up before moving the steering wheel in any direction (in, out, up, down). I have not used this feature for the last 6 years, and maybe I've got the movement direction wrong. Regardless, the lock lever must freed-up before trying to move the wheel.
In light of complexities involved as you have described, I may just forego the solution and leave it as is. Unless, of course, there are other approaches to freeing up the lever.
