Wireless Carplay/Android Auto Single DIN w/ GT3 Console Delete

After my most recent road trip in the GT3, there were a few niggles that I want to iron out before my next road trip. The big one was missing driving instructions because I couldn't hear my phone. There's also an appeal to updating the interior. If I went the PCCM+ route, I'd have to shove the HVAC unit in the glovebox, which is an option I'm considering. On the other hand, I came across one of these which has a fairly generous tilt mechanism: https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/P...EX/DMH-WT86NEX Height adjustment and tilt: I was thinking that I could probably install that in the bottom slot and it would obscure the HVAC controls. If I needed to adjust the HVAC, I could just til the screen down and access the controls. Dumb idea?

I just came across and find it extremely appealing: You Tube A single DIN head unit that integrates a phone mount so you can use your phone for navigation and such. Looks like it uses an App to connect the phone to the unit. They're available on eBay for $150. Not dumb at all - I thought about the exact same thing, but the compromise is that your headunit screen "floats" out of the horseshoe instead of tidily integrating with it. I have this headunit in my BMW. Best phone holder/headunit combo hands down BUT the app doesn't work in real life as they claim. I only treat it as a bluetooth headunit now to play music and GPS audio. The phone mount itself is super solid though, so you can just leave the phone screen on and that's your new "Android touchscreen" while you drive. I know other people are working on different solutions to this exact problem - it's 2024, our 996's should be able to run double-DINs if we feel like it. I took up both DIN slots on mine with a Sony 7", my HVAC controls live under the dashboard tucked away in an enclosure. Would you be interested in something similar?

I want one of those. My wallet will just have to deal/go to therapy or something.

I didn't care for my double DIN HU even before I did the console delete. Line of sight was too far down for navigation. Switched to a headless setup (marine BT receiver, custom volume ****, and equalizer stashed under the seat for tuning purposes). Everything goes is run off my phone. Hazard trim is the perfect mount location (I might be biased). On plane with the gauge cluster. Plenty of options for BT integration for the OEM single DIN HUs as well. @yaz996 I'd love to know the parts list and set up you did for your receiver and volume ****. I was just thinking about this last night.

Yeah, I'd like more details on this @yaz996 as I could possibly run one of the Android Auto portable units in the location you mentioned while allowing for installation of a cubby. In another thread, someone mentioned an Alibaba android auto headunit that looks like the PCCM+ that might be an option as well. Putting the AC controls into the glovebox would make the interior a lot more modern.

Here's the parts list. I used that equalizer because it let me add front/rear and left/right fade along with basic frequency band tuning. Its velcroed to the Rennline fire extinguisher mount for the Euro GT3 buckets (not included in the part list). The volume **** is a basic RLC with RCA input/output. I designed/printed a custom enclosure to fit the RLC in the cigarette lighter location. Also used the outer bezel from a wiper speed control switch (DC Auto included it for free with some trim parts I had purchased) to give OEM finish and symmetric appearance. BT adapter is hidden in the dash.

I have the GT3 console delete too, and have been thinking about this. The climate controls are actually two parts when you open it up, the front is the display and buttons, the back section is the main PCB, connected by a ribbon cable. I would like to check how much space there is behind the console delete as, from memory, although there is not enough room to put the climate control as is, if taken out of the case and the back pcb was vertical, I think it would fit, you could then just cut a slot out for the display and its little surround and have a very neat solution. I have been meaning to look into it for months now, but just not bothered.

Behind the Porsche console delete there's almost no room, not enough to flush even just the screen. I had the same thought as you haha. There's also the consideration that if you do manage to flush it all the way back there, you have to reach pretty far under the dashboard to adjust the HVAC which is ergonomically not great. If you want to pursue it, all that needs to be done is bring out the front surface of the console delete about 7-10mm. Still an ergo issue IMO, but it'll look super clean.

Yaz, do you have any more details or pictures how you made the volume work with the wiper switch? That's a brilliant idea! After seeing this, I'm thinking of using the same setup but instead find an adapter from rj12 to RCA cable to control my JL amp volume.

Thanks for the offer and pictures yaz, much appreciated! I like to tinker around and have been working on a console delete. I like the headless idea so much I ditched the single din. I was able to use the bezel and half of the wiper switch plate that snaps into the horseshoe. Sound still needs tweaking and get a finished product for the consoles delete. Cardboard in the meantime untill I can cut and weld some stainless together. Thanks again for the inspiration!
