Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

he actually came out and i think the people who were doing it were there (two young teenagers who then indicated to him that they say the guy and called the police, he took their license plate # down but it turned out to be a temp tag that was expired)......
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Leading evidence: 'temp tag' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'temp tag' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

hey guys,
im coming over from bimmerforums ( i have a 98 M3)..... my dad has an 02 911 C2 and in the last month and a half his xenon lights have been stolen TWICE..... the first incident they got both lights and the damage they did to the car put the total bill at 6 grand ( 4k in body damage and 2k for the lights).... to boot, it hpnd at our house....... recently it hpnd again, this time they only got 1 light and it happened at the biltmore hotel (for people who know miami)...... he actually came out and i think the people who were doing it were there (two young teenagers who then indicated to him that they say the guy and called the police, he took their license plate # down but it turned out to be a temp tag that was expired)......
here is my question.... my dad is fed up... he's had porsche for the last 23 yrs and loves em (this is his 2nd 996)... he's ready to end the lease early and turn the car in because this is a real pain in the ***.... he wanted me to find out if there was a solution made by an aftermarket company.... i found the 5 page thread recently about stolen lights on this forum but it turned into you guys arguing about what a ricer is..... solutions such as parking in well lit areas etc are futile cause the first time it hpnd at our house (no garage)
how about putting a tape, stickers or deep etched numbers?
Sorry to hear about your problems, but if make it harder to steal, it will cost you more to repair
i agree.... the biggest prob when it happens is the body damage incurred..... i was just wondering if someone like by design or teckart released something (maybe headlight covers that surround them?) one suggestion i gave him was to pick up a set of non xenons .... maybe they wont go after them then....
2pak, How did they steal the lights? Did they damage the trunk or anything? You need to pop the trunk to get to the lights. Why not get an aftermarket alarm?
Oh ****, I thought they were only getting the 99-01 lights! This is all we need.
Unfortunately, there is no way I know of to stop it. Perhaps he could get an alarm with a proximity sensor and two-way remote. It would alert him if anyone goes near the car.
You could rig an alarm with a simple switch that would be tripped when the headlights are removed, or when any of the screws holding it down were removed. This is nothing fancy, I built a radioshack kit like this when I was a kid.
Also an alarm with a shock sensor (pretty much any aftermarket alarm) that is mounted right up by the headlights (but not visible, even with the hood open) would help.
Between the 2 of those you should be making enough noise that in a well trafficed area....the thieves will just run.
Battery to Off/On Switch to Coil to Headlamps = Electrifying Crime Fighting Device. This is system is used on MANY armored autos [for protection of other parts of the vehicle].
I don't think a alarm would frighten any professional theives as some car alarms can sometimes trip so often. During the Holidays last week, in a large shopping mall parking lot, my alarm went off by me accidentially, and I could not quickly shut it off. Shoppers didn't even look, what was even worse ta police car was about 25' away, and he didn't even challenge the noise, or me fumbling with my keys and remote.
I don't have a solution - seems like 15 years ago when thieves stole our radios.
Is this really practical? For example will the coil discharge through the paint on the car? RE the headlamps, there is not much that is not made out of plastic on those things. Last time I had one out, it appeared to me that unless the front hood is unlocked they were not removable without doing a lot of damage to them. How are they removed on a car that is locked?
Gretch,
There's a front hood release as well, just in case the one release in the cockpit breaks. Maybe that's one way of stopping them, removing that front release...
these are all good suggetions however it won't prevent theives from "attempting" to steal them...... most of the damage is incurred when these dumbasses hack at the front fender tunnels and the hood / bumpers .... if we disable the hood release, they'll prob not be able to get the lights but theyll prob **** up the hood so bad...... whether they get the lights or not, the body damage is always well over 1,000 which is the deductible so it continues to hurt..... i was hoping there was some kind of thing that would go over the headlight, like an eyebrow for the e36 3 series that might prevent theives from taking em thinking it would be too tough.... i guess he shoudl just get an alarm and put a sign on his hood whenever he goes anywhere warning the dumbasses that if they try to jack them, think twice.
Here's how to stop this from happening to your car (click on "2003 anti auto theft devices" or "2002 anti auto theft devices" on right pane of site.
