Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
steering wheel vibration at high speed is due to either:
Leading evidence: 'either' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'either' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check each tire' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have had my wheels rebalanced several times, tracking checked several times, bearings checked several time, new tyres and so on.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 1999 996 and at (relatively) high speeds, I notice a moderate vibration, especially in the steering wheel. This vibration is non-existent at low speeds (< 60mph). However, between 65-85mph the vibration is VERY noticable (peaking at about 80mph). Oddly enogh, going faster than 90mpg, the vibration is very minimal (yet it is obviously still there).
I have tried a TON of stuff to get rid of the vibration. I have had all the wheels balanced twice. I have played with the tire pressure (higher the pressure, the vibration seem somewhat dampened). And I have replaced the rear tires (the front tires still have quite a bit of tread in them).
I would *really* appreciate any and all advice. Thanks a ton in advance!

I had this problem for 3 years up until I blew a tyre just before Xmas.
This resulted in me getting 2 new tyres for the back axle. I have had my wheels rebalanced several times, tracking checked several times, bearings checked several time, new tyres and so on. But always had that vibration at about 80mph.
I put Goodyear Eagle F1's on the back. Since then for the first time, this vibration has gone. The car feels and drives different. Its a whole new experience. Handling is 100% better and wet roads, what are they!
I love these tyres.
Scousers right on the money as to what is one of the most common cause for vibration at speed: TIRES. As my tires wore out, vibration, tramlining, noise, all becoming more pronounced. New tires, same brand (P-Zero), everything went back to where they were: perfect!!
Three "agrees" here, it is almost always tires, irrespective of how much tread the ones you have. A tire that develops an out of round condition, ONLY gets worse.
make that four "agrees"! steering wheel vibration at high speed is due to either:
1) a bad tire
2) bad balancing
having them rebalanced doesn't necessarily mean they're not going to vibrate. they could have been incorrectly balanced each time!
Same here, a tire a problem with two tires being out of round. Factory replaced them. Ask your tire guy to check each tire with a run-out guage. It's amazing how out of round a "round"tire can be.
Replaced them, no more vibration.Haven't even had them rebalanced in a long time. Run perfect.
Thanks all... I have PZeros in front (have had them for quite some time). I'll look into replacing them, and hopefully teh vibration will go away.
