Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone have this? At $129, seems like a pricey replacement for a $20 part. Are there other alternatives? Is it also true people get stuck on the road because this breaks?

i have it. i put it in when i installed the short shifter in my boxster s. it is a more beefy part so i installed the shift link since i had everything taken apart. i have only read about one instance of someone getting stranded from the broken part.
For whatever reason, it seems to be a problem with the twin turbo cars. I can't really explain this because I thought the cables and shifter were the same.
I can think of just 3 people. 2 turbo and 1 996. They were not clear if the plastic cable connector broke or just became disconnected.
I think it has to do with shifting style. If you are slamming the lever into gear then I can see how there will be problems. If you are a "normal" shifter then I would not worry about it. Jeff
Thanks guys...
When I did my B&M SSK install, this is what the shifter link thing looks like. I can't believe the thing wears out that fast..
I will probably just order the OEM part new for less than $20 instead.

Jeff's explanation makes perfect sense. I know one person in a 996TT who lost the linkage while on the track.
It's scary when you realize that with every shift you depend on that little itty bitty $20 piece of engineering...
Hard to tell in that picture with all the grease.
When I do a B&M install I wipe the grease off and inspect the part. So far I have only seen one that was a little beat up - but the owner was a hard shifter.
For peace of mind I would put the EVO cable connector in if you are a hard shifter.
... shift linkage on my 99 996 failed at about 30,000 and left me stranded. EVO makes the replacment part to address this not uncommon failure. I don't believe I am either heavy handed or hard on the equipment. The dealer indicated this was a fairly common replacement. If I was going to keep the car for a while, I would definitely upgrade with the EVO part. Good luck...
