Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 2003 Carrera 4S just turned 225,000 miles Running super great 😊 she eats rear tires for snacks. Aftermarket front and rear LEDs to help with visibility at night lowered B8 with sports springs about 100 K ago. painted techno twists. One clutch change at 125k too many tires to count. Oil changes religiously between 6 and 10 K full synthetic. The normal stuff for proactive maintenance. Couldnt be happier🏁

POST 5Original post

Congrats, and nice to see a well used 996! Curious, besides normal maintenance and wear items, have you needed any internal engine work, or is everything still original?

I have a one man in the shop that I use Daytona Eurosport. Rick hes the best no significant oil consumption. Perhaps 1 quart between oil changes. Engine never opened. exhaust is stock, but with a couple of of the bypass tubes plugged in sounds beautiful 1 clutch. IMS at the time also. 1 AC compressor at 175k 1 alternator at 100 k I think. rebuilt front diff at 150 At 200k replaced all four lower control arms. The rears were squeaking. recently I hit a pothole from hell 😡 bent a front lower control arm and chewed up a front spoiler. This is the second chin spoiler replaced because the car is low and driveways it scratches them up. as a lifetime alignment from Bridgestone so every time I get new tires, they align and tell me my car is lowered and the camber is maxed out ha ha. About 150 I was getting noise from the front diff. I pulled it and had it rebuilt and for the last 75K miles its been running as a rear wheel drive. I just have been too lazy to put it back in. It runs beautifully as 2 wheel drive. recently, there was a huge puddle of water under the car. I was in Orlando. I went by the dealer because it was close. Tech said I needed to drop the engine pull the AOS replace it and while I was there just do all the regular things like clutch etera they gave me an estimate after an hour looking at the car of $5K I filled it up with water drove back to Daytona left it with Rick. He fixed it in about 30 minutes with a brass fitting and a rubber hose charged me $40 bucks. essentially, there is a rubber hose with a plastic fitting on the AOS thats needed in cold country cars. That water runs heat into the AOS. that plastic fitting will crack and leak dump a crazy amount of water. since a Florida car he bypassed very quickly. when the engine is dropped at 250k maybe 275 for clutch etc will probably do more extensive work then. bulletproof reliable multiple cross country to Texas from Florida runs I do not hesitate to get in my car and go anywhere.

I filled it up with water drove back to Daytona left it with Rick. He fixed it in about 30 minutes with a brass fitting and a rubber hose charged me $40 bucks. ^^^Yup^^^ that sounds about right for a Dealership Tech Theyre not mechanics that know how to diagnose and fix broken things. Theyre basically salesmen in mechanics outfits that throw parts at problems and make $ for the stealership - this is their primary purpose - dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Its not the Techs fault per se - this is exactly the function they are trained for. The old guys like Skip are no longer around at the dealerships - Theyve retired or moved on to their own shops or shops where they can actually practice their craft. Youre fortunate to have one of them!

911s are meant to be driven. They will go as far as you maintain them. I won’t see 200K, so it’s up to the youngster to carry on. thanks Seeuuu - maybe, just maybe, one collector will see this & get behind the wheel.

Hi Carlo the center reflector is not lit. I replaced the rear lights with LED to help with visibility. Over time in the front and rear of the 996 the headlight wiring made with soy coating cracks causing loss of voltage and light output is not as bright. If you search the forum here youll see aftermarket LEDs that fixt that from a couple different companies. The ones I picked are a beautiful red however overtime the OEM faded center reflector had an orange hue that didnt look right with new led taillights. So for a few years, I just blacked out the center reflector. I liked it but also not liked it because one of the important parts about the C4 S is that center reflector. I saw on Instagram a gentleman in Norway, Alan Mesick. Heres his email address. He put a decal that he made out of reflective material using the Porsche font on his 996. I purchased the decal from him for about $100 USA. I did the same thing using a new center reflector that because its not sun faded more closely matched red aftermarket rear taillights LEDs. The decal is reflective, but the center reflector is not lit. some pictures. Ive gotten different feedback. Some people say I should not have as much lettering on the back of the car I like it. Right, you aint kidding. Im nail biting with my 121k 996.2 c4 (non S) But this is good to hear! some things are breaking which I started a post for those reading out there in digital land now and for future readers: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-new-here.html

POST 16Original post

I'm not "nail biting" but certainly don't push it anywhere near as hard as I do my 991.1 C2S. It's more of just a cruz around with the top down type car for me. I still get on it but don't hammer it. As long as you do the maintenance on them they will last a very long time. Mine runs flawless and smooth........so I'm hoping it remains for another 100k that way

POST 17Original post

Great post, Seeeu911, that is some impressive mileage. Are you the original owner of the car? I like the decal on the rear center reflector...it looks very well done. Also, just curious, did the steering feel improve in your opinion after removing the front diff? Did it feel noticeably lighter or more responsive? I have often toyed with the idea of doing this to a 997TT.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Im the second owner less than 50 K when I bought it. I purchased it as a driver car and Ive been doing that happily. Sans front diff it definitely feels more like a regular C2. You can throttle spin the rear tires and power slide the car happily. Not necessarily ultimately faster, but certainly more hooligan easier. I do notice a weight difference. Very rarely does the traction control light up usually if I do a heavier throttle takeoff while the car is slightly unbalanced It will almost give you a revlimiter power dip if as it tries to push power to the front wheels, but of course it cant.

Happy you are enjoying yours ! these cars are not at all fragile. Expensive if you break it but yeah. Driving as an adult there are many many faster cars on the road so Its not really a race like when I was a younger kid, but I do enthusiastically sport drive this car. Regularly to the rev limiter sometimes Ill go for a midnight or 1- 2 AM back road fast fast drive and when I bring it back after a couple hours, its heat soaked and hot and sweaty after good workout. Seems afterwards she runs happier ? There are more modern Porsche you can drive faster and hard. This 996 C4S is a treat with its mostly analog lovely lovely 911 energy. Use your car like the Porsche gods intended 👍🏾

The "Search & Diagnose" was my motto in my (ages ago) "air-cooled" Porsche-VW shop. I would give a customer options and their choice on procedure based on my best observations and knowledge. I'd say in about 95% of the time my "fix" was faster, less cost, and more relevant for the owner. A 914/6 came into my shop with a no-start/zip/dead condition. The local dealership wanted to replace the battery, starter, wire harness, and possibly remove engine/trans. I dug around with it and discovered a rusted stud & nut for ground strap that was not connected any more. Repair stud, new nut, attach, and fixed. I don't remember what I charged, but it was waay under what the "stealership" was going to do. For reference, I was in the Garretson/Bruce Anderson crowd of folks at the time, all good folks. I still have a "bent-***" screwdriver that Bruce Anderson loaned me (forgive me, Porsche God) to fix a generator breakdown on a highway somewhere. YMMV

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
