The final few pieces are the transmission mounting brackets, and after watching many videos on the process, I have not seen anyone warn that the upper mounting bracket must be installed BEFORE the transmission is installed.

I just spent hours wrestling my newly rebuilt transmission into my car and tightening all the bolts, and now I am finally ready to finish this two-month project.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am hoping I am not screwed on this. I just spent hours wrestling my newly rebuilt transmission into my car and tightening all the bolts, and now I am finally ready to finish this two-month project. The final few pieces are the transmission mounting brackets, and after watching many videos on the process, I have not seen anyone warn that the upper mounting bracket must be installed BEFORE the transmission is installed. I actually just rewatched a 996 video, and he just popped it on in a few seconds. I, however, do not see any possible way to get this bracket over the transmission without removing the whole f***ing thing again. I am really hoping there is some special Tetris method of doing this, which I just can't figure out yet. Anyone?

POST 2Original post

I have never been in this position before. But I would try to lower the gearbox at the front of the car to the point where you can flip the U braket on and push it back up. Of course your C4 front drive axle does not help this whole thing.

POST 3Original post

Hey yea I went through this recently on my c4s and after several attempts I was able to shimmy it from the top of the transmission . You have to be forceful with pushing the bracket to the other side but it be ok. You must lower the engine and therefore the transmission angle down the farthest it can go. This is with the engine mounts on. It be ok. Having a hydraulic jack under the engine helps lower engine safely.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the reply. I could not see how it would be possible, so I am currently almost done with the process of taking everything apart again. I almost have the transmission back out, but I can't get the damn thing fully separated. I'll be back at it tomorrow and am writing on the bracket "INSTALL BEFORE TRANSMISSION!!" in case I ever have to do this job again (which I hope I don't).

POST 5Original post

You certainly dont have to separate the transaxle from the engineJust lower the whole unit enough to slip the bracket in. Also, if you remove the studs, you wont have to drop the trans as far

Yes, you've answered your own question. I did a project with an LN certified installer and have attached images. He inserted that bracket BEFORE the transmission went into the car. He also didn't bolt it down UNTIL the transmission was properly mounted to the engine. See pictures below... 1. Before transmission goes into the car, rear mount bracket is inserted. (see arrow) 2. Rear mount bracket is NOT bolted to the car yet. The mount is just laying on the rear of the transmission. Transmission is then raised into position 3. Transmission is properly mounted to the engine and rear mount bracket is slid into place. 4. Mount is then bolted to the chassis and rear transmission bushing.
