Brutal week last week. Had me working half of Sunday too. So, today, I'm working it up 1999 style, aka, telecommuting. In between emails and conf calls, I started to think (bad idea, me knows) that these toys of ours aren't exactly cheap. So I started wondering what ya'll did for a living and what was the highest level of education attained (trying to see if there is any correlation).
andy, you got some weird degress.... just like me. B. Arch., M. Arch., MBA.

I run one of several businesses owned by my family trust. More specifically, we do printing, specializing in labels and product packaging.
Looking to get out of this as soon as it's financially feasible and move into something more enjoyable like real estate or running my own hotel.

This diverse ethnic and social cross-section of music society enables me to keep my finger on the pulse of many things in life. You'd be amazed what a web of connections it affords me. Never liked popular music. Also into weapons and cigars.

Always looking to get into something else but I love my Ticket Business, especially this time of year. Baseball Playoffs is both exciting and profitable.. I get the best tickets to all events, hopefully sell them at good premiums, and I get to goto any event I want as well. It has been a vehicle for me into the real estate investing, something else I also enjoy but can be very tedious.

Too much fun reading the posts of others not to participate;
Unlike the fellow from the UK, I keep lawyers from helping people tooo... much, i.e. General Counsel for an insurance company, with several side ventures, including a beach club and a current project of putting together a submarine condominium for adventurous souls interested in exploring the last place on earth unseen by man.
Worked (?) for the state geological survey for 22 years and then moved over to the business I started with three friends 18 years ago, so now I only work one job. We have an analytical chemistry business. Our speciality is stable isotope analysis of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, usually in gases.
BS Engineering Polytechnic

Partner in Security Engineering firm - we design and install electronic and physical security system for commerical and industrial clients.
Interesting to see the majority of people here are tech/eng/sci educated as compared to med/law or sales/marketing
Wow.. What a list..
I provide shelter for people of means...
I do design/build of California castles, formally a bored Real Estate Broker with some college. Never got a BS, but used plenty of it.........
Used to be a junkyard mechanic hobbist. My girl friend (now my wife) had a brother in law who owned a auto junkyard.
Can you believe it - an 18 yr old motorhead having a auto junkyard at his disposal. In 1959 I got my first Porche there: a '54 Speedster with 8" windscreen (as well as a 50 Merc, 50 Ford Bus Coupe & chopped top; 52 Studebaker & put in 55 Olds engine, 50 Olds bus coupe, '52 XK 120 & the best of all a 52 Alpha Romeo with a DeDion rear end independant suspension). What a way to end your teenage years.
Okay, i'll bite...
BA (bull**** artist?) bus. admin, minor real estate. ca real estate broker, tenant representative. office/industrial property.
in my next life i will be an f1 ace and beat schumacher's race record (will he be a 6-time champ?). growing up, my heros were niki lauda and gilles villenueve and i always knew porsches were in my future
Interesting posts, indeed.
For me...B.S. in Aeronautics from Arizona State (however, greatly wish it had been from Notre Dame!). I work for America West Airlines in Phoenix in supply chain management within the Technical Operations Division.
Amazing diversity. One common thread that has already been pointed out is the tech/engineering angle. Another one seems to be part-time or full-timers in real-estate. Not as many JD/MDs as I would have ventured to guess at the outset. Nor as many entrepreneurs, although there definitely are some. One with his own oil company!!
Myself, I have a BS in Petroleum Engineering from University of Kansas and now working as a Systems Architect for a major insurance company. Trying to get into either Kellogg or Chicago for p/t MBA starting next semester.
There are a lot more people so let's hear from those of you sitting on the sidelines. Inquiring minds wanna know
Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from Villanova. Currently working to complete MBA at Fordham. Now work at an Industrial filtration company specializing in radiation removal from Nuclear Power Plants. Some forms of investing on the side.
only an associate degree, elctronic engineering here. Currently the Formula Atlantic Program Manager, working with CART.
I really need to go back to school..
Wow I can't believe that there are so many nerds who own Porsches.
J/K, but there is an overwhelming amount of technical people who responded and relatively few doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs as one might have expected.
I enjoyed reading some of the posts that mentioned guns and I thought I'd throw out the fact that I am definitely a 2nd ammendment advocate and I also enjoy fine wines, bourbons, and cigars. RRRRR, I can feel the testosterone flowing through my veins!
Well we already did a wine & cigar run earlier - maybe we need to put together a shooting run. We can call it the Porsche Drive By.
Well since you opened up the door... I concur on the 2nd amendment, beyond motor-sports my other vices are quality (Italian) food, wine, cognac and cigars.
I am President & Founder of a twenty year old National Human Resources & Technology Consulting business. I've also written two books and a computer program for my industry.
No I'm not a repo man. However, I reside in the most dangerous part of Oaktown. My players club is located in the heart of Piedmont. Werd!
Ironically, my new plates for my 03' 996 says "CRYMPYD". I completed a High school GED, kicked out of 3 high schools in San Francisco and jailed 3 times for felony car theft. Not very proud of what I do, but then again, so are most lawyers.
Very interesting post....
I have a BS from USC for Safety and Systems Management. I've been a safety engineer, industrial hygienist, and Sr. Lean Mfg Representative for the Boeing Company. Left Boeing to join a supplier for Boeing as it's Director of Operations then left to join Tyco Electronics where I started as a production supervisor and ended up being the Master Planner. Currently I consult companies on EHS, Operations, and Planning issues.
Trojan
the entrepreneurs, lawyers etc are probably too busy making money/doing deals/driving their cars - whereas some of the 'techy' people spend more time on the computer and are thereby able to respond to this thread.

What do you write? Will I have read any of them?

CEO & founder of a 12 year old computer technology company.
B.S. from Vanderbilt
20 years as an investment broker with 2 major wirehouses.
Own an investment firm managing individual portfolios, specializing in small cap, value stocks.
Bought my first Porsche, an '02 Targa, in April.
I'm the top mobile and wireless analyst in the industry...
Oh and unemployed thanks to an acquisition and poor planning by another company...
So I sit around waiting for the market to get better, or I drive to random locations and try to think of ways I can keep my Porsche when the bank comes calling...
Any tips?
Oh I almost forgot, I have a law degree too... anyone want a photocopy?
Works for me... I too, am a 2nd A backer. So, for the drive by I'll be packing a .45 Detonics, smoking a few Cohiba Extra Vigoroso's while sipping my single malts or vino's... although, it might be hard to drive my P-Car too...
I too am surprised at the amount of techies that own P-Cars...
With the last four declining years of Tech revenue, all that pre-employement IPO stock is probably used to paper the out house or put under the P-Car in the garage...LOL.
I am the President of a National Executive Search AND Human Resource Consulting firm that I founded in 1982. We specialize in the High Tech Sector. Prior, I was VP & Partner of another Search firm, with a total of 30yrs experience at all phases of Head hunting.
Oh, I forgot, BS/MBA in telling others about their behavior, what their IQ's are and what's possible with their lives.
Some college... started out as a computer programmer 14 years ago... senior programmer, project manager, senior project manager, director, vice president, chief technology officer, and now I own my own consulting company....
When I was 11 I remember seeing my first 911.... I promised myself that I would have a 911 before I was 30. Worked real hard for that dream... finally realized that dream when I was 32....
About the geeks on this site, if you think about it for a second only technical people would bother writing to each other on a web site.
Ha that's funny!

Have an MBA (Master Bull**** Artist). My gig is trying to understand why people do what they do, or don't do what we would like them to do. I've been doing it for over 20 years and I still can't get it right. But if we were all completely predicatable what a boring existence that would be!
BS Chemical Engineering - Work on the control systems for refineries etc. mostly draw pictures, tell stories, and play with computers. Past 8 years as an independent consultant/contractor.
Maybe some of us just don't want to advertise. MD's have an old school philosophy about advertising being unethical. I'm old school, and my younger partners think I'm crazy
.
So, just to add to the mix, I'm a surgeon. I slice and dice people for a living. Lots of fun, second only to driving the P-car!!
Paliting... I understand both of your positions. Driving my P-car is #1, holing out a wedge shot from off the green is #2, and my profession is #3.
I have 2 close MD friends and their of the same school. Very low profile verses their younger counter parts today.
Interesting mix of occupations.
Me:
Some college, 25 years in the point of sale industry, Sold nationwide company we built, started new company 3 years ago. Been into BMW's for quite a while with M coupes. Bought first P-car in November for 50th birthday. '03 Seal Grey Targa. Got the "mod" sickness real bad.
Happy Holidays!
Jason, I know you were kidding. Even if you weren't I wouldn't care.I've always been an easy target, just ask my friends. I must also assume that since you have such a nice car that you probably don't need a job. My goal with the trucking company is to keep it below 100 employees. The staffing firm was a BITCH. 8 years of hell -fighting state unemployment hikes, work comp.issues, I.R.S.,2000+ employees, lawsuits, etc... Just ranting -blustem
I have to agree with the posts of MD's above...I usually don't tell people what I do.
I only mentioned it here because hopefully no-one here knows me.
If you were to meet me on the street I probably would not tell you what I did, and if I did, you probably would not believe me...I don't fit the "soap-opera stereotype". I usually look like hell after many hours of operatiing and zero sleep.
I hope I did not offend my MD colleagues...sorry if I did.
i can relate to not fitting the md bill!
i am black and 33 but look like i am 23. tall and thin. i look and dress relatively urban. though i am not often hit with overt racism i am hit with the occasional "are you a professional athlete?" or once while waitng for my car to come through detail at porsche i got "one day if you work hard you could get yourself one of these!" from an older white gentleman. I laughed to myself and said "yeah maybe". i love not fitting the bill. typically it people embrace my difference...its fun!
i have to say at eh porsche dealer in phoenix they took me seiously from day one even before they ran my credit!. Chris M. and Mark S. are cool as hell!

BA in English (Technical Writing)
MS in Management
I'm of a technical background too... My initial training as a computer/electronics technician is what landed me the job on the ballistic missile submarine. It was like being on a real life starship Enterprise.
Still haven't found my 996 or 993TT that's right for me...Yet! I'm only 2 months into the search, had an '01 996 Cab lined up and had it sold out from under me...my loss, although it made some strange racket at 6000 rpm.
Selling real estate in one of the best places on Earth.
But garage queens spend alot of time uninsured, under a cover, while 500 inches of snow fall, then melt. Most of you worry about clubs fitting, try getting skis in one of these things.
JDMBA (MBA is in insurance and risk management) and a few hours to PHD which has gone by the way side. Never intended to use it as I am a trial lawyer and that all I ever want to do. I just thoguht the PHD would be cool to have, but I guess one doctorate is enough.
After 17 continuous years being paid to develop Mac software currently unemployed due to AOL's whacking, er, laying off 450 people in the CA offices (adds new meaning to the concept of a Christmas Bonus). Trying to decide what's interesting enough to do next, possibly going to school as 4 credit hours of German does not a degree make. That is one thing I'll miss about Silicon Valley, experience and skills were as valuable as a degree. I don't think I can say the same about tech jobs in Central FL, much less find a Mac development position around here.
Wow.. cool thread.
I have a assoc. degree in audio engineering / production from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, Canada.
Been working in studios recording music since then - I know have my own shop. I do mostly CD mastering, some mixing and some other production. It's a lot of fun....
trev
You need tp put the skis on the top of the car!! gET THE ROOF RACK! Better yet get the skibox like I have! Works great aand I fit my two kids skis and mine in there along with their boots!
I've been using Pro Tools for a while now. I'm in the process of building my own studio in my basement, should be finished next month. I'll put in HD3 Accel System and a control|24 should be fun... nice to see some other music freaks!!
