Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I did get charged $125 from the dealer once and that cured me of that bad habit forever.
Hi There,
This is a question that I suppose anyone can answer, but would certainly appreciate the Canadian (especially Ontario) members to answer.
Recently took the 99 996 into a local official dealer in Toronto for an oil and filter change (10K after 100K service). Thought that it was better to get the oil changed sooner rather then later.
Anyways, for the privilage of allowing gravity to evacuate the sump of its contents, unscrewing a filter, and topping it up with 9 liters of overpriced Mobil1, the bill came to slightly over $300.00!!! I had no real problem with the price of the oil (expected a markup), but 1.5 hours of labour - give me a break (I didn't even wait for 1.5 hours)!!! Is this normal? In the past we have felt that the bills for repairs and major servicing have been reasonable at this dealer, but this is the first time for a simple oil change and were shocked? Am I just cheap or is this average for an oil change? Does anyone know of a Toronto (preferably North) area shop that does great work on 996s for cheaper?
Thanks,
Jeff
Yes that is normal. The actual cost of an oil change is around $60 in materials and 15 min of labor. It is VERY simple to do in your garage with basic tools.
I do my own oil change, Sandoval is right on the cost, and it couldn't be much easier to do. I did get charged $125 from the dealer once and that cured me of that bad habit forever.
SO what oil do you all put in. I know this topic has been touched on before but seems like there is a new bulletin about what oil u can and can't use every week.
Good to hear that I'm not the only one who is being charged 250+ for an oil change at Pfaff...
Like one poster said, its an experience that will not be repeated. The dealer used Mobil1 0W40 by the way. Seems to work well.
On a side note, it had been less than 10,000 KM (@6000miles) since the last major service, and the mechanic said that the oil was VERY black and dirty... and suggested more frequent oil changes in the future. Has anyone else been told this? The manual suggests oil change intervals of around 20,000KM (not that I trust this), so I figured halfing it would be safe.... The car used no oil (that I could tell) over the 10,000KM. What could cause such dirty oil? It is used almost exclusively on the highway - something that I thought was good for the motor... Ideas?
Go to the 928 website and search on "long drain interval" A guy in Australia did a long term study on oil drain intervals with synthetic oils. The results were very impressive. Your mechanic is just doing his best to make a living, but his advice may not match the facts.
Interesting that you mention the 928 forum... I've read that topic before... the 928 was traded in on the 996. The 928 had over 300,000KM on it, and the oil came out like new every time (every 5K). That's what has me a little worried or perplexed at the very least... I guess we'll see the condition of the oil for ourselves next oil change.
