The exhaust and polished oem tips installed cost me just over $1300.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have the stock exhaust system on my '99 996. Does anyone have specific recommendations as regards exhaust upgrades, and also where to purchase? I find the stock exhaust sound a little whiny...
I have the Fabspeed exhaust on my 99 C2. Nice deep throaty sound while under load, not to loud when cruising. The Porsche Sport Exhuast system is popular too (and pricey), it has more of a raspy sound to it.
Fabspeeds are cheaper....around 1K I think. They have a website

Here's my fabspeed sound revving stationary w/no load. Sound from cockpit w/top down.

The choices are multiple, and all very good. I have a bias towards OEM products, so I chose the PSE. Its pricier, and some say it's not worth the price diff. I am installing it without connecting the electronics, but it's nice to have the option of connecting the electronics at a later date should I want the occasional quiet running.
For those of you with the Fabspeed muffler: The stock muffler on my '99 996 has a brown oxidized/rusted appearance. If I upgrade to the Fabspeed muffler will it stay shiny or will it oxidize also?
I favor the PSE. It's a Porsche part so you know it will be right for the car. There is absolutely no unwanted boom or resonance at ANY rpm inside the cabin. Period. I've yet to go to an autocross without someone coming up to me, asking about the exhaust. and saying how great it sounds. And these are often owners of air-cooled cars who aren't always that free with compliments for the water-pumpers.
(No flames please....I was an air-cooled guy for 15 years). The PSE makes the 996 sound like a Porsche flat 6 powered car should sound, not some other muffler manufacturers idea of what a "throaty exhaust note" should be. Just MHO.
Way to go Fabspeed.
Mark, It's metal so it will oxidise although if you get the fabspeed tips they are unlikely to oxidise since the polishing is so excellent. get the fabspeed tips when you get the exhaust. I didn't get them (lol!) but from what I have seen advertised recently here in the UK most dealers are throwing them in on the deal. I think the PSE is also excellent but its expensive and IMHO all it does is just emphasize the existing engine sound (which is beautiful in itself). But the fabspeed sound is much warmer giving a real feel good factor. Recommended.
Well it was a PSE for me. I thought about this for awhile before making the decision, and did many searched on Exhaust on this site. I love the sound have maybe turned the radio volume up twice since the installation last month, well maybe three times
I chose to install the mufflers only with no electronics to enable the switch on the dash.
Good sources for purchase:

I dealt with Justin at Brandywine, got a good deal and had the PSE insalled locally for $200.

silver996,
I may be selling my 911, in which case I'd like to sell the PSE separately. I just put it on about 4 months ago. I ordered mine new from Brandywine.
If you're interested, PM me and I'll keep you in the loop about my decision.
Thanks!
Note: My car is a 99, and the PSE I have has the narrow pipes (old style).
I just had my Fabspeed installed by Tom at Wheel Enhancement in Culver City. Very happy with the sound. The exhaust and polished oem tips installed cost me just over $1300. By the way the tips really look good.

I've decided to wait for a few months before making any decisions about my car, so I'll be keeping my exhaust. I'll post again in the future if it turns out that I sell the car.
Thanks everyone for your interest.
Casey
Would it still be possible to come by or meet you somewhere to hear what your exhaust sounds like? Any one in the SF BAy Area with a Fabspeed Exhaust I could listen to? I know people have posted sound files on the board, but nothings that same as hearing it in person
Thanks
Kirby,
Yes, we can still arrange to meet sometime so you can hear the PSE for yourself. And whichever one you get, I'd be glad to help with the install. Let's try for a couple weekends from now - I'm all tied up next weekend.
Just in case you are interested in what the Fabspeeds look like after a day at the track:

Nice, aren't they?
They sound even better than they look.
My first post here so better not make an mess of it
Not sure if relevant to the USA but here goes anyway
I have just taken delivery of my second 996 (98 my) in a couple of years and have the cargraphic exhaust fitted and previously had a 996 Tip (00 my) and had the Techart fitted.
The Cargraphic is a lot cheaper and just a bit more basso then the techart which gives a very Ferrari 355 type sound.
Think i prefer the Cargraphic as not TOO loud on the autobahn - have just returned from 1200 mile trip to Munich just for fun and didnt have a ringing in my ears that i think can get from the Techart.
Obviously exhaust sounds are very personal INMHO.
