I checked the fuse and replaced the bulbs (which the old ones weren't burned out).

My mechanic said he replaced the reverse light switch (that's what it says on the bill, at least) and they've worked fine since.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, I have a C2 996 2003 and my reverse lights are not working for some reason. I checked the fuse and replaced the bulbs (which the old ones weren't burned out). Still no reverse lights. Anyone encounter this before?

POST 2Original post

Yes, my '99 C4 had the same problem and it wasn't the fuse or the bulb. My mechanic said he replaced the reverse light switch (that's what it says on the bill, at least) and they've worked fine since. Looks like it cost me $112.50 in 2008.

POST 3Original post

The switch costs about $20 bucks, at Autozone (amazingly they carry it in stock) or you can order online for about $15. There are multiple DIY's for it, I have yet to replace mine but need to. I understand it's fairly simple and about 30-45 minutes. Cheers, DS

POST 4Original post

The DIY is straight forward. I went OEM for $30. The switch is on top of the transmission (driver's side). Disconnect the electric plug, 10mm wrench (if I remember right) to loosen it. Use your hand to unscrew it all the way out. Don't be surprised by a gurgling noise. Hand thread the new one in and just snug it up. Too tight and you will twist it in half. Trust me on that one. Snap the electric plug back on and you are done. 30 minutes tops.

POST 5Original post

if you are not really slender you might have to jack up the car to get access.

POST 6Original post

Goto to the link, first post, last pic is the location of the reverse switch... Easy job. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...orial-diy.html

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nice, thanks fellas for the responses. I'll have to give it a shot!

POST 9Original post

Its just about the easiest DIY job on the car... Oh no.. Maybe the air filter in the engine compartment. Thats your problem for sure. The reversing switch on the transmission casing. Have fun.

POST 11Original post

hit it with some pb blaster before loosening it. your life will be easier. otherwise, simple repair.

POST 12Original post

I've tried to replace backup switch, fuse and bulbs, but still no light. Any ideas?
